Who: "Dances
With Wolves" star Kevin Costner and handbag designer Christine
Baumgartner
When: September 25, 2004
Where: The wedding was held on the groom's Aspen, Colorado ranch.
The Ceremony: A tune by The Rolling Stones greeted the
bride as she stepped out of a vintage pickup driven by her father,
walking down the petal-strewn aisle past three hundred
guests who had spent the past few days on the 165-acre
ranch, enjoying barbecues and friendly games of baseball. The
groom, who had arrived at the event on a horse-drawn wagon,
waited for his intended at an altar festooned with hydrangeas
and white delphiniums.
At the conclusion
of the twenty-minute ceremony the newly betrothed took
a few private moments to reflect on their new life together
as they paddled in a canoe on a nearby lake that mirrored
the autumn palette of the surrounding trees.
The Dress: While the ceremony was designed to have a
"down home" feel, the bride's ruched ecru satin ballgown
by couturier Monique Lhuillier was anything but homespun. Adorned
with satin roses that complimented the crimson roses bound together
in the bride's bouquet, the strapless gown had a bustle
effect which hearkened back to a more genteel age. An ivory
veil woven with delicate gold wire and pearls at the crown was
fastened to Christine's blonde locks, which she wore loose.
The groom paired a refined, dark grey cashmere suit by American
designer Ralph Lauren with a grey and white polka dot tie and
a crimson rose boutonniere.
The Ring: The bride's understated diamond solitaire engagement
ring has now been joined by a five carat, square-cut diamond
and platinum wedding ring by vintage jeweler Neil Lane.
The Reception: The pair's quirky sense of humor was evident
as the strains of the Austin Powers theme announced the arrival
of the bride and groom. A more reverential note was struck as
The Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" was played for
the couple's first dance. The menu included caviar
with salmon, beef filets garnished with onions and baby carrots,
sea bass and a quadruple-layered cake composed half of chocolate,
half of strawberries and decorated with latte-colored frosting
fashioned into the appearance of antique lace. Guests enjoyed
a comedy routine by "Home Improvement" star Tim Allen
and a performance by country crooner Clay Walker.
The Honeymoon: Sparks first flew between the couple on
a golf course, so it was only natural that the "Tin Cup"
star and his new bride were drawn to the Scottish fairways at
St. Andrews, Scotland as a locale for their honeymoon. Christine,
acknowledged by the actor as the more accomplished golfer of
the pair, watched from the sidelines as her husband participated
in the annual Dunhill Tournament alongside celebrities such
as Hugh Grant and Michael Douglas.
