Who: Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco When: April 19, 1956 Where: St. Nicholas Cathedral, Monaco The Event: Though Prince Rainier and Princess Grace were officially married in a civil ceremony on April 18, the religious ceremony the following day, billed "The Wedding of the Century", is the event that 30 million viewers watched on television. Following Monaco tradition, Grace, escorted by her father, was the first to walk down the aisle. The Prince came last, wearing a Napoleonic military-style uniform, which he designed himself. The Dress: A wedding gift from MGM Studios, Grace Kelly's wedding dress was designed by MGM's head costume designer, Helen Rose. The high-necked gown was created from four hundred and fifty yards of Brussels rose-point lace and silk taffeta, while her veil was embroidered with pearls and orange blossoms, and she carried a small Bible and her lilies-of-the-valley bouquet. The Reception: Seven hundred guests attended a reception in the Palace Court of Honor. The bride and groom cut the six-tier wedding cake with the Prince's sword. Special Moments: On April 18, after they were officially married in the civil ceremony, Grace and Rainier held a reception for the 3,000 citizens for Monaco. This was an opportunity for each of Rainier's citizens to shake hands with their new princess.
