When: July
1, 1998 Where: The
couple were united in matrimony in an evening ceremony held
at the bride's Malibu mansion. The Ceremony:
Exactly two years to the day since their first date, the iconic
singer took the arm of her son as she began her descent down
a staircase festooned with crimson roses, greenery and ribbons
of lace, walking in time to the strains of "The Wedding
March" and "The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse"
until she reached her intended, who stood in the living room
of her Malibu mansion, transformed for the day by Designs By
David into a virtual indoor garden filled with lillies of the
valley, gardenias, stephanotis and 4,000 roses. One hundred
and five guests, including John Travolta and his wife Kelly
Preston and Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson witnessed the fifteen
minute, traditional Jewish ceremony. The Dress:
Conjuring up images of Edwardian romance, American designer
Donna Karan created a low-cut, crystal encrusted wedding gown
paired with a 15-ft. veil, which was attached to a halo of white
blossoms that rested lightly upon the bride's upswept hair.
To further enhance the look of a bygone era, the bride wore
a pearl and diamond choker. Crowns of white
roses interspersed with greenery graced the heads of the two
young bridesmaids, who each wore matching pale pink dresses
with tulle skirts. The rose theme was continued with blushing
pink rose wrist corsages and hoop wreaths composed of pink roses,
ivy and ribbon. A hoop wreath was also carried by the groom's
young daughter, who acted as ring bearer. Molly Brolin was garbed
in a floor-length white dress with a delicate purple flower
print. The groom's granddaughter, who served as the flower girl,
wore a knee-length. long-sleeved pink dress paired with white
stockings and shoes. The Reception:
Pink water lilies and illuminated candles drifted on the surface
of a swimming pool reflecting the figures of guests as they
made their way to a 2,800 sq. ft. tent, where soft-shell crabs,
porcine ravioli and slices of a four-tiered wedding cake embellished
with sugar roses was served on 18th century Sevres porcelain
plates. Later, the bride's voice echoed on the grounds as the
performance-shy singer serenaded her new husband with two love
songs. The Honeymoon: Not straying far from home, the newlyweds decided to make a short excursion to the Channel Islands near Santa Barbara.
