Eloping? Skip Vegas and Discover Your Perfect Elopement Destination

When most people think of eloping they probably think of taking a quick trip to Las Vegas to have Elvis marry them in a little white wedding chapel. But Vegas isn’t the only place to elope these days. Just because you want to elope doesn’t mean it has to be a cheesy, last-minute affair. Whether you’re looking for a beachy, scenic, magical, tropical or a winter wonderland elopement destination, here are some other options for couples looking to say “I do” with just the two of you – minus the drive-thru ceremony and rock ‘n’ roll officiant.

Beachy: San Diego

An online poll on rated sunny San Diego as the top spot to elope in the U.S. — no doubt due to its consistently pleasant weather and many beachside locations. If you’re looking for a destination-style elopement without leaving the continental U.S. then you won’t find anywhere better than San Diego.

Scenic: Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Say “I do” whether by land (on a cliff overlooking the falls), by sea (on the famed Maid of the Mist boat) or by air (during a helicopter ride above the falls). With one of the country’s most beautiful natural wonders as the backdrop, your big day will surely be an unforgettable experience.

Magical: Orlando, Fla.

The lights of Las Vegas don’t hold a candle to the magic of Walt Disney World. Whether you’re eloping with children in tow or you’re simply kids at heart looking for your fairy tale wedding, you can tie the knot in Cinderella’s Castle or overlooking the entire magical kingdom as you begin your happily ever after.

Tropical: Honolulu

Lisa Tabb and Sam Silverstein, co-authors of the book Beyond Vegas: 25 Exotic Wedding and Elopement Destinations Around the World, wrote that, according to a Bride’s magazine published in 2000, the average U.S. couple spent $19,104 on a “conventional” wedding. That total has only gone up within the last decade. Hawaii has long been the top honeymoon destination in the country, so why not save money by tying the knot there as well?

Winter wonderland: Denver

If you’re looking for a more rustic, winter wedding destination, Denver has you covered. From a small ceremony atop a peak in the Rockies, to a honeymoon complete with skiing and other snow sports, this Colorado hub is also just a short drive from Aspen, Vail, Boulder and other popular winter sport destinations.

When it comes to elopement destinations, the U.S. has every type of wedding and honeymoon spot a couple could hope for. From vows on the beach to a honeymoon in the mountains, wherever you live, there’s sure to be a fabulous place to elope nearby. And remember, eloping isn’t the only way to save money when getting married. Once you tie the knot, read some auto insurance reviews online and request a few car insurance quotes to see if you can now save even more money on joint policies with your new spouse. Then you can start saving for your first anniversary trip to celebrate your first year of wedded bliss.
