Couple Celebrates World's First Weightless Wedding

Has he swept you off your feet? Are you head over heels in love? This weekend, one bride was literally head over heels for her groom thanks to the world's first weightless wedding.

Zero Gravity Corporation (ZERO-G®), the first and only FAA-approved provider of commercial weightless flights, played host at the wedding held Saturday, June 20. The lucky couple, New York-based Noah Fulmor and Erin Finnegan, said their “I Dos” while flipping and floating mid-air over Florida as they made history as the first bride and groom to be married in zero gravity!

The wedding officiant was Richard Garriott, the sixth private explorer in history to go to space and the first second-generation U.S. astronaut. “I am honored to be taking part in Erin and Noah’s wedding. I know firsthand the added thrill microgravity will play in their already joyous event,” said Garriott. “The excitement from these ‘first ever microgravity nuptials’ will not soon fade in the minds of all the members of the wedding party.”

The event took place in G-FORCE ONE, ZERO-G’s specially modified Boeing 727-200 aircraft which departed from the Titusville Airport near Orlando, Florida.

During the weightless ceremony, Fulmor and Finnegan along with their entire wedding party, flew and flipped as Garriott united the two as man and wife. Over the span of nearly eight minutes, the vows and rings were exchanged in a microgravity environment.

Fulmor and Finnegan have been together since 2002, but even before they met, they shared a dream of space travel. As children, both wanted to be astronauts: Erin attended space camp in Michigan, while Noah volunteered at his local planetarium. “When we started talking about marriage, Noah joked that we should have our wedding ‘in space,’” Erin said. “Although most girls would take this to mean Noah didn't want to get married, I knew he was sincere, and that this was a serious request.”

When experiencing zero gravity, Fulmor, Finnegan and their guests enjoyed 10-times more hang-time than the world’s best basketball player. It’s not simulated; ZERO-G replicates the same levels of weightlessness enjoyed on Mars (1/3-gravity), the moon (1/6-gravity), and zero gravity.

The couple plan to re-broadcast the ceremony on their Web site. And there's no doubt that they'll have wedding photos unlike anyone else's!

ZERO-G will be traveling around the country, hosting its exclusive weightless flight experience in the following cities:

2008617: The Hollywood Chapel Offers Special Same-Sex Wedding Package

As same-sex couples in California ushered in a new era on June 17, 2008, so The Hollywood Chapel wedding venue also marked the dawn of a new day as it officially opened its doors to all those in the Los Angeles County who want to say "I do."

In celebration of the Supreme Court's ruling to allow all California citizens who are in love to experience the joys of marriage, The Hollywood Chapel is offering a special "Wish Upon a Star" package for lovestruck same-sex partners. Wisconsin offers plenty of resort, on the water and B&B wedding venues, but it is also home to chapels and even museums like the Milwaukee Art Museum
(photo: WI Department of Tourism) that can serve as wedding sites. Here's a list we just received from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism of wedding sites to consider:

Vegas-Style

Wisconsin Dells now has its own wedding chapel in the same style of the popular wedding chapels of Las Vegas. Dells Bells Wedding Chapel (608/393-4228) offers affordable, yet elegant weddings without the price tag that often accompanies a couple’s special day. Wedding packages start out with a Vegas-style option for $250, which includes the use of the chapel for half hour, an officiant plus silk bouquet and boutonnière for the bride and groom. For a little more money, the couple-to-be can have the “We Deserve It All” day complete with wedding cake, invitations, three hours of limo service, a professional musician, photographer and floral arrangements.

Charming Chapels

Wisconsin’s rural towns and villages are home to a countless array of intimate and historic chapels. Many of these charming chapels are available for rental to couples that want to exchange vows in Wisconsin’s pastoral settings.

One of the most visually scenic settings is The Chapel in the Woods (715/258-7385) on the Crystal River in Waupaca. This charming little sanctuary has been the site for more than 5,000 weddings. The Chapel in the Woods comes furnished with an antique pump organ and stained glass windows. A walk on the grounds reveals a gentle river, gardens and gazebo, the perfect backdrop for wedding day photos. The Chapel in the Woods is available year round for weddings up to 20 people.

The Moravian Church at Heritage Hill State Park (920/448-5150 x304) offers breathtaking views of the park and has long been a romantic setting for weddings. A wedding consultant on staff can help with a variety of services such as officiant, florist, photographers, musicians, and horse and carriage service. The Moravian Church is equipped with a piano and an organ and can seat up to 150 guests. The grounds provide a stunning location for picture-perfect wedding day photos.

If the bride or groom has a passion for flying – or even if they don’t – the EAA Airventure Museum’s Fergus Chapel (920/426-4800) in Oshkosh is another charming location for the big day. Located right on the grounds of EAA Airventure, this chapel was donated by a former EAA board member as a memorial. The Fergus Chapel has the rural feel of many Wisconsin churches, yet offers the convenience of size and location comparable to many traditional wedding churches.

Unique locations

In Milwaukee, couples can chose one of the most exclusive and unparalleled views of the beautiful Lake Michigan waterfront with a ceremony at Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin (414/765-9966) or the Milwaukee Art Museum (414/224-3200). Both museums offer a variety of rental and catering options to weddings and special events.

From late spring to early fall, Olbrich Botanical Gardens (608/246-4733) in Madison provides an outdoor garden setting for the ceremony and receiving line and, of course, a blooming background for wedding photographs. Winter weddings can shift indoors to either the all-glass Atrium or the exotic Bolz Conservatory.

With its backdrop of many scenic lakes and rivers, it's no surprise that many couples opt for outdoor weddings in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism just sent us this information on Wisconsin charter boat operators that offer everything from complete wedding packages to a sunset cruise for wedding parties.

With seven vessels and experience with more than 400 wedding celebrations, weddings are off for smooth sailing with Lake Geneva Boat Cruises (262/248-6206). In addition, Lake Geneva Boat Cruises employs two full time event planners to coordinate weddings, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, and other parties for 20 to 200 guests.

For a wedding at sea or ashore, the Apostle Island Cruise Services ( 1-800-323-7619) two ships, the Ashland Bay Express and the Island Princess, can do both. Plan a wedding among the beautiful wilderness of the 21 Apostle Islands or make it a nautical theme with a setting on a dock or next to a lighthouse. NOTE: Boat captains are certified to officiate wedding ceremonies!

Clear Water Harbor (715/258-2866) operates the Chief Waupaca and Lady of the Lakes on the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes. The charters can host up to 80 people with food and beverage service for a brunch, luncheon or just simply cake and cocktails.

Consider exchanging vows while rolling down Old Man River aboard an authentic steamboat. Private charters for weddings, reunions, or other special events are in big demand on the La Crosse Queen (608/784-8523) and the Julia Belle Swain ( 1-800-815-1005), which are both docked in La Crosse. Whether the event is hors d’oeuvres or full-service dining, a DJ or a five-piece band, couples can tailor their steamboat event for a memorable day.

Summer means months of outdoor activity in Wisconsin...and that includes outdoor weddings. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism just sent us this list of luxury resorts offering wedding venues (and event-planning staff members to help you plan the details!)

Readers of Wisconsin Bride magazine recently named the Heidel House Resort (1-800-444-2812) “Best Honeymoon Resort & Best Reception Site.” The resort offers two ceremony sites – in the garden surrounded by flowers or lakeside on the shores of stunning Green Lake. The Escapade yacht can host up to 65 people for a reception. Other reception sites suit a number of events from a casual cookout to a lakefront reception seating 250 guests.

Exchange vows in front of Telemark Resort’s 55-foot field stone fireplace, at the top of Mt. Telemark or the intimate parlor. Photo opportunities are endless at this resort, which is located on 950 acres of pristine Northwoods forests. A large number of Wisconsin’s inns and bed & breakfasts offer couples personalized service and intimate settings for their special day. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism (travelwisconsin.com or call 1-800-432-TRIP) just sent us these B&Bs across the state that welcome weddings:

Westby House Victorian Inn (1-800-434-7439), located in the Norwegian community of Westby, offers a setting fit for small, intimate weddings with up to 40 guests. Couples can either hold ceremonies inside the Inn or outside at the Wedding Garden Gazebo. Offering two customized wedding packages, the Inn provides the officiant and a variety of specialized services including floral arrangements, and reception and dinner catering options.

Marinette features two “sister” properties offering a classy setting for wedding ceremonies: Lauerman House Inn and M&M Victorian Inn. Acclaimed as a premiere example of colonial revival architecture, Lauerman House Inn (715/732-7800) offers an elegant setting with its original art glass chandeliers, and birds eye maple, mahogany and elaborate wood trims. Built in 1886, M&M Victorian Inn (715/732-9531) is a fully restored Queen Anne style Victorian home featuring original carved woodwork and leaded stained glass, as well as a curved, all wood staircase.

Couples will find a storybook wedding destination at The Hollyhock House and Gardens (920/388-3445) in Kewaunee. The Queen Anne-style Victorian cottage sits on two acres of gardens and lawns, and offers a variety of settings for ceremonies and receptions. Outside, the garden features a brick patio with pergola, fountains, a wicker swing and more. Wedding parties up to 40 guests are a perfect size for intimate, indoor ceremonies. Couples-to-be will receive an in-house consultant to assist with the wedding planning process as well as a Wedding Gift Basket filled local gifts and treats.

Turn back time at the Eagle Centre House B&B (262/363-4700), an authentic replica of an 1846 Greek revival style stagecoach inn. Located in Eagle near Old World Wisconsin and Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest, this B&B guarantees a unique, memorable experience with its period décor and century-old antiques, including two wood-burning stoves in the common rooms!

Tufts’ Mansion (715/743-3346) located in Neillsville, features an in-house band, catering services and countless options for an intimate, romantic ceremony. Couples can tie the knot in a variety of cozy settings including the parlor, library and even on the staircase. Following the ceremony, the Manion’s front porch swing gives newlyweds a romantic backdrop for classic wedding photos.

The gazebo at the lovely White Lace Inn (1-877-948-5223) in Sturgeon Bay has been the setting for many elopements. American Historic Inns Guidebook named the White Lace Inn one of the “Top 10 Most Romantic Inns.”

Couples can choose to exchange vows in the music room, on the carved oak staircase in the foyer, or by the fountain garden and pergola on the grounds of the Old Rittenhouse Inn (1-800-779-2129) in Bayfield. After the ceremony guests can sit down to a gourmet dinner or luncheon of trout au champagne, hazelnut crusted pheasant or herb-crusted beef tenderloin.

Justin Trails (1-888-488-4521) in Sparta hosts weddings up to 200 guests for the ceremony, reception or both. Large silver maples, various pine trees and yews make beautiful backgrounds for wedding photos. Couples can book the whole resort for a quiet, private intimate space for their guests.

The landscaped gardens and gazebos of both Victoria Treasure (1-800-859-5199) in Baraboo and Coole Park (715/747-5023) on Lake Superior’s Madeline Island offer picture-perfect locations for a memorable wedding day.

80518: Save Wedding Money By Saving on Taxes

Money is on everyone's minds these days. We've been seeing a lot of tips on how brides can save money...but here's one we just received that we hadn't thought of: saving on taxes. The Inverness Hotel in Colorado is promoting the low tax rate in their area, something that can be a real money saver when you add up all the costs associated with a wedding.

Tip: When shopping for a wedding location, shop by city rather than venue--since not all state and city taxes are the same.

What to look for: venues in areas with low city taxes or even cities that are in unincorporated counties

Example: The Inverness Hotel in Englewood, Colorado is located in the unincorporated part of Arapahoe County and therefore does not charge a city tax. Also, Englewood's 4.35% state and local tax is low compared to other popular cities like Denver, which has a state and city tax rate of 14.85%. Looking at average wedding costs of $19,000-$40,000, brides could save $1,995-$4,200 by hosting their wedding in Englewood instead of Denver and still have a beautiful Rocky Mountain wedding. Colorado as a state also has one of the lowest state tax rates coming in at 2.9% versus other popular wedding destinations like California (6.25%), Florida (6%), Maine (5%) or Hawaii (4% - Oahu adds an additional 1/2% for mass transit system).

This year’s winner of The Knot’s Best Real Wedding Award was given to a couple whose wedding was held at Florida's The Ribault Club and planned by Amelia Occasions.

The Wedding: Jessica Whalen Skelley, a Fernandina Beach native, and Jason Skelley said their vows at The Ribault Club in Jacksonville, Florida on December 15, 2007.

80415: Environmentally Sensitive Weddings at Florida Resort

Everyone's trying to be greener these days and that extends to weddings as well with everything from organic fabrics to earth-friendly invitations. Eco-consciousness includes the wedding venue as well and now we've received word of an eco-friendly resort that offers beachside nuptials: the 253-room Sandpearl Resort & Spa overlooking the Gulf of Mexico in Clearwater Beach, Florida.

The Sandpearl, which opened its doors last summer, was developed with an environmentally friendly vision. Built-in "green" benefits include indoor air quality, energy-efficiency, water conservation, natural resource and beach environment conservation and more, in fact the resort is tracking to qualify as LEED certified, which stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design."

Wedding Venues: The Sandpearl offers five settings for both destination weddings and classic receptions:

• The Gulf Lawn spans just over 6700 square feet, and is perfect for a beach garden ceremony for up to 350 guests, or a reception-style event for up to 700.
• The Hunter Ballroom is located at Lobby Level, seats 150-325 guests, and is available in 3 sections.
• The Harbor Ballroom can accommodate a dinner for up to 150 guests and is located on the third floor.
• The Private Dining Room has a Gulf View and is located at Lobby Level, seating 15-35 guests.
• The Cove Room has a Gulf view and is located on the third floor, seating 20-48 guests.

Reception Options: Dining options and special touches offered by the Sandpearl's wedding maestros include a selection of custom menu luncheon, dinner or buffet wedding packages, featuring 4 hour bar; champagne toast; butler passed canapes and hors d'oeuvres; salad; intermezzo sorbet; entree; warm rolls; tea/coffee; plus a custom designed wedding cake. Prices begin at $130 per guest for the Akoya Pearl Wedding Dinner. (A taxable 21% service charge and applicable Florida sales tax will be added to all package prices. Other fees may apply.)

Enhancements offered for an additional cost can include, among others:

800409: Charleston Giving Away a Destination Wedding
