Dear Readers,

Where is the summer going? For our Northern Hemisphere readers, we wonder if this summer season is going as quickly for you as it is for us. What happened to those weeks and weeks of endless summer we enjoyed as schoolkids? It seems like summer just started and we're already seeing autumn ads on TV (and writing stories about holiday travel!)

July is always one of the hottest months in Texas (where we've had a "cool" summer...only two or three days topping 100 degrees!) We often try to schedule a trip someplace cooler during these hot, hot months. For some travelers, that means a trip to Colorado or maybe the Canadian Rockies, but, for us, it often means the Caribbean. It's off season in the islands right now so that means lower prices, smaller crowds, and plenty of space on those great beaches to enjoy a cool breeze.

This July we made our first trip to Belize. For years we'd been wanting to visit this small country, one that combines a Central American atmosphere with Caribbean beaches and a spectacular reef.

In late July, we spent a week hopping around the country and packing in all we could in seven short days.

We started our journey up north in Ambergris Caye with a visit to two very different but equally wonderful resorts: Journey's End and Cayo Espanto. Later in the week, we took a tiny plane back to Belize City and then connected on a small flight to southern Belize, to the South Stann Creek area.

Leaving Belize City, we soon saw mile after mile of uninterrupted jungle.

About a half hour later, we were pulling down in the middle of that jungle, landing on a private airstrip near Kanantik Resort.

Before we reached the resort, we were met by a lazy crocodile at the side of the road, the first of many native creatures we'd see during our jungle experience.

We covered as much of Belize as we could during the trip, heading all the way to the border with Guatemala to tour the Xunantunich ruins.

While we were there, we took advantage of our proximity to Guatemala to take a quick trip over the border for a little shopping. (OK, we also wanted the stamps on our passport...we are true travel nerds!)

We enjoyed writing about our adventures in Belize in this month's issue.

Whether August brings you a world of travel or a chance to stay home with the one you love, soak up those last days of summer.

Until later, Paris and John
