Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge

Think the only wildlife in Las Vegas is standing around the nickel slot machines? Think again. About two hours from downtown Las Vegas, you’ll find this preserve filled with unique species of plants and animals. To reach the refuge, take I-15 north from the city to US95 North. Continue to Nevada 160 South. Three miles from the town of Pahrump, turn left on Bell Vista Road and continue to the south entrance of the refuge.

What makes this refuge unique is its species, such as the endangered pupfish. This tiny fish is found at a place in the park called Crystal Spring, one protected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Although some areas are protected to ensure the survival of these species, other areas are available for visitor use, including nature trails and picnic areas.

There’s no admission fee for visiting the park. The visitors center is open 7am-4:30pm weekdays.
