Texas
Romantic Getaway: Rockwall
Rockwall is a romantic
community located on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. Considered
one of the worlds top inland sailing lakes, this lake
has 100 miles of shoreline. Two yacht clubs, marinas, and docks
give the community a marine atmosphere where guests enjoy sailing,
windsurfing, fishing, and surfing. Rockwalls
history goes back far before its time as a place to get married
or enjoy a weekend at the lake. The site was originally inhabited
by the Caddo Indians, then later by pioneer farmers. These early
settlers tilled up the remains of an underground wall that may
have been built by prehistoric man or by the upheaval of the
Balcones Fault. The wall gave those founders a name for their
community. Today on the historic
square you can still view a portion of that early rock
wall. But the ancient stones are just one reason to visit
the downtown area. Here youll also find antiques shops,
art galleries, and crafts stores. As the day draws
to a close, head off to the Texas Queen (Dalrock Rd. exit south
off I-30 E., 214-771-0039) for a ride aboard a 105-foot paddle
wheeler. Musical entertainment keeps the spirit lively on a
dinner cruises scheduled Wednesday through Friday and Sunday.
The double-deck boat departs from Elgin B. Robertson Park; reservations
are required. Short
and Sweet Getting There:
