Have the two of you ever wanted to feel like you’re living in another country, even if it’s just for a few precious weeks? One way to get a real “home away from home” vacation is with a villa or home rental. We’ve enjoyed villa vacations (that’s us at a Jamaica villa, right) and, surprisingly, they’re not as expensive as you might think. Because you’ll have all the kitchen facilities you’d find in your own home, you’ll be able to stroll to the local market that morning and shop for your meals, then return to your villa and prepare a romantic dinner.
You’ll find these rentals around the world, sometimes by different names. Look for both villas and beach cottages in the Caribbean, villas in Spain, and gites in France. (Just what is a gite? It’s a French holiday home that’s for rent for a self-catering holidays. Technically to be called a gite, the owner of the home lives somewhere nearby so they’re available to answer your questions…a great way to get true local advice on where to go on your vacation!)
Besides the self-catering aspect and the immersion in local culture, another bonus of a villa vacation is the ability to share it with other couples. Many villas are large enough to be shared by several couples, a real cost-cutter! We’ve shared villas with vacationing friends on several occasions and it has all added up to a vacation that costs less per night than a resort getaway.
