Description:
This completely restored air conditioned 2-bedroom 2-bathroom 1869 "steamboat gothic" cottage was built by John Fauth, a master carpenter from Bavaria who made barrels, carriages, caskets, & furniture. He put his best craftmanship in his own home which he built by hand over a period of 10 years. He was so proud that he carved his initial on the side of the classic fireplace mantel in the Texas room. The parlor is highlighted by a parquet floor featuring long-leaf pine, black walnut, and oak in an original design. The vaulted pressed-tin ceiling with decorative lighting in the kitchen, Elmira stove, and kitchen fireplace provide comfort and relaxation for you after you return from shoping for antiques and visiting the sites of the location of the first battle of the Texas revolution against Mexico.
The cottage is the third oldest residential structure in Gonzales and the 2nd oldest that is still occupied. Ceiling fans cool the front porch and back porch. The entire private cottage is yours!
Gonzales was founded in the frontier of gentle rolling hills west of the Colorado river in 1825 and named for the governor of the Mexican states of Coahuila and Texas. It was the capital of the colony founded by Empresario Green DeWitt and brave German, Czech, & Polish immigrants. Within a year, Commanche and Wichita Indians burned the town and killed a settler. In order to protect the citizens, the Mexican govenor sent a 6-pound cannon to Gonzales in 1831. After Santa Anna became dictator of Mexico in 1835, he wanted the cannon back from the insurgent "Texians." Gen. Santa Anna sent his brother an a small group of soldiers to reclaim it. The cannon was quickly buried in a peach orchard. The next morning, 18 Gonzalians ambushed and defeated the group of 100 dragoons on the east bank of the Guadelupe River about 10 miles southeast of town. The battle cry for this "first shot of the Texas revolution" was "Come and Take IT!" A year later, Santa Anna did just that when he returned to the Alamo with an army of thousands. Thiry-two men from Gonzales died in the Alamo while fighting for their freedom. Gonzales was the only town that responded to Col. Travis' frantic plea for re-enforcements. A few days later, the only survivors, Susanna Dickinson and her infant daughter sadly returned to their home in Gonzales.

Directory Search Tips
Completely
spell out city and state/province names. Use "Los Angeles" rather than "LA" and
"Hawaii" instead of "HI."
Specify at least one listing type: Accommodation,
Cruise, Wedding Professional, Tour Operator, Other Travel Professional
You
may select more than one listing types if you like. You can search for all the accommodations and wedding professionals
in Cancun if you like.
You
may search any word used in the business description. Businesses provide a description of their services which
is fully searchable.
No
luck with your search? Try
a broader search. Instead of looking for accommodations in Paris,
France with honeymoon packages and a pool, try just accommodations
and France.
