St.
Thomas: Fast Facts
Getting Around:
You'll never have
to look far for a taxi cab; in fact, they'll often come looking
for you. However, if the two of you need a ride from Charlotte
Amalie between about 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., you may have to check
with several taxi drivers. During this time, they start picking
up cruise passengers to return to the ship and won't take
less than a full car or van load. Check for licensed taxi
services by looking for license plates that begin with the
letters "TP."
The two major
towns--Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook--are connected both by
road and ferry. Charlotte Amalie is a very much a pedestrian
city, and you'll be able to shop and dine all day without
need of a taxi. After dark, however, use common sense precautions
when striking out. Like other cities its size, Charlotte Amalie
has had its share of crime.
Entry Requirements:
You'll need proof
of identity upon airport check-in, but incoming travelers
do not need to pass through immigration when they reach St.
Thomas. You can also travel to nearby St. John and St. Croix
from St. Thomas without proof of citizenship. It's a good
idea to bring along your passport, however, in case you decide
to take a day trip to the nearby British Virgin Islands.
