Fine dining and elegant accommodations also lead travelers to
the Golden Lemon, located on a black volcanic sand beach in
the shadow of the island's volcano. Owned and managed by former
House and Garden decorating editor Arthur Leaman, this 17th
century greathouse and the 15 contemporary seaside villas are
filled with West Indian antiques. For the ultimate in luxury,
two suites offer plunge pools literally a step from the living

Renovated after
Hurricane Luis, this all-inclusive resort is recommended for
couples looking for activity. Home of the country's only casino,
the resort offers plenty of organized fun and evening entertainment
as well as a modest golf course. All activities, along with
food and drink, are included in the price. Although it is not
located on the beach, it's just a short walk to the sand and
surf. Jack Tar is also recommended for couples on a budget;
it's one of the best priced accommodations on the islands.

Legend has it that this 18th-century greathouse is haunted,
but that doesn't stop the vacationers who come here looking
for peace and quiet. Guest rooms in the greathouse and in nearby
cottages are nestled on 35-acres of tropical grounds. Along
with golf and tennis, guests can explore a small rain forest
on the grounds and search for vervet monkeys. Visitors have
access to a nearby black sand beach.

As far back as 1690 a plantation now named Rawlins began producing
sugar. Nearly 300 years later, the greathouse, burned in an
early fire, was reconstructed and opened as an inn. Today Rawlins
is in the hands of Cordon Bleu-trained chef Claire Rawson and
her husband, Paul.
Along with dining,
the chief activity around here is pure relaxation. With no phones
or televisions in the 10 guest rooms, the emphasis here is on
leisure. The most romantic of the hideaway rooms is the honeymoon
suite, housed in a 300-year old sugar mill. Guests climb a winding
stair from the downstairs living room to the upstairs bedroom
perch, its walls made of volcanic stone.
