Over a decade ago, we spent our honeymoon at this resort located
on the outskirts of Mo Bay. At that time, it was a standard
Holiday Inn, albeit one with a private white sand beach, live
entertainment every night, and restaurants which introduced
us to Caribbean cooking.
But today this hotel
has become even better. Following a major recent renovation,
the 516-room Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort is now all-inclusive,
offering guests a package that includes all their meals, drinks,
non-motorized watersports, tennis, golf, daily activities, theme
parties, shopping excursions, and a Great House tour.

Located eight miles west of Montego Bay, this elegant resort
is "old" Jamaica, a reminder of the time when guests
came with their steamer trunks, brought the latest European
fashions, and stayed for weeks. Today, this is where the rich
and famous come to vacation; Ralph Lauren, Paul McCartney, and
the Kennedys have been spotted on the guest register at this
exclusive resort.

The Sandals chain was started in 1981 by Gordon "Butch"
Stewart with Sandals Montego Bay, a resort located next to the
city's Donald Sangster International Airport. This location
has a potential negative, but Sandals turned the airport traffic
to its advantage with its romantically minded guests: every
time an airplane flies overhead, guests kiss their partner.
With Jamaica's increasing popularity, there's a lot of smooching
going on at Sandals. The kissing must be working; Sandals Montego
Bay has the highest return guest rate within the chain.

The atmosphere at nearby Sandals Royal Caribbean is slightly
less lively than its neighbor, Sandals Montego Bay. What it
may lack in liveliness, it more than makes up for in lavishness.
Small touches -- cool towels on the beach, herbal teas in the
gym, aromatic saunas, continental room service -- make this
resort styled after a Jamaican plantation truly royal.
Along with lavish
grounds, mini suites with private balconies that overlook azure
waters, and public areas that blur the boundaries between indoors
and outdoors, this property boasts the only offshore restaurant
in Jamaica. Bali Hai serves Indonesian cuisine, prepared by
an Indonesian chef, in an authentic atmosphere. Guests are ferried
out to the island (which by the day doubles as a nude beach)
to enjoy a multi-course meal served family style. When the two
of you arrive at the restaurant, the hostess offers two wraps
for you to tie around each other's waist--simultaneously. It's
a fun start to a romantic evening of dining by candlelight in
a setting that's exotic and elegant. The Sandals Royal Jamaican
is one of our favorite properties in the Sandals chain both
because of its very friendly staff and its stylish accommodations.

This 47-room, 49-villa property is one of the finest in Jamaica
with rooms tucked in private villas (with pools, natch) and
a traditional greathouse. The golf course here is Jamaica's
best-known, considered one of the world's best. It is set on
the site of a former sugar plantation. Don't miss the water
wheel (it's right on the road) which is a must for photographers.
The 18-hole golf course was designed by Ralph Plummer and is
often cited as one of the Caribbean's best. The course is home
to the LPGA's Jamaica Classic and the Johnnie Walker World Championship.

golf course, presently under construction by the Ritz-Carlton.
