Bahamas: Festivals

The biggest blowout of the year is Junkanoo. Junkanoo dates back to the island's slavery days and a time when slaves were give permission after Christmas to celebrate with African traditions. No one quite knows the origin of the term Junkanoo. Some believe it came from John Canoe, an African leader who demanded the right to celebrate even after he was brought to the island as a slave. Other people believe the term came from a French term used for the parade masks.

Fortunately what really matters is fun and everyone agrees on that during Junkanoo. Starting on Boxing Day (December 26) and continuing until New Year's Day, Junkanoo is filled with parades, partying, and lots of noise.
