Time for a Second Honeymoon?

Is it time for a second honeymoon? And just what is a second honeymoon?

More than just a traditional vacation, second honeymoons are the chance for couples to plan and take a trip that focuses on romance. Whether it’s the dream trip you wish you could have taken (or afforded) for your first honeymoon or whether it’s just a few quiet days to focus on each other, a second honeymoon, like a first, puts the emphasis on love.

Just when is an appropriate time to take a second honeymoon? Like a vow renewal, some couples opt for second honeymoons at landmark anniversaries: fifth, tenth, twentieth, you name it. Others choose to celebrate their love after an especially stressful or busy time or just because the calendar—or the pocketbook—permits.

Celebrity Second Honeymoons

The trend toward second honeymoons has hit the celebrity scene, too. Recently singer LeAnn Rimes and husband Dean Sheremet, married for three years, enjoyed a second ‘moon at Mexico’s Las Ventanas resort. The singer told OK! magazine that “vacations are a huge part of our relationship because we just need to get away. We go to the spa and get away from everyone and just relax.”

Husband Sheremet told the weekly magazine, “we have to build in little breaks and just make time for each other and say, ‘Okay, look—this time is our time. Write it on the schedule. No one bothers us. Book it up, and we’re gone!’ No phone calls, no cell phones, no e-mails, that’s it. Now we can go to Las Ventanas, take four days, and rekindle everything.”

Planning a Second ‘Moon

In planning a second honeymoon, the two of you will face some of the questions that first time honeymooners consider:

  • Do we want to minimize our travel time and maximize our relaxation time or are we OK with a long airline trip?
  • Do we primarily want to relax together or do we want to sightsee and explore?
  • Do we want to enjoy a sport together…or learn a new one together like scuba diving?
  • Do we want the isolation of a villa or a private island resort or would we like a larger resort with more dining and entertainment options?

Whether you’re getting away from the demands of a high-pressure job, a family, or just looking for a change of pace, a second honeymoon can be a sure to say “I do” to your commitment to each other all over again.
