Movie Love: Hotels and Hollywood

If a picture’s worth a thousand words, then a romantic film must qualify as an entire encyclopedia on honeymoon planning. Before the two of you pack your bags, cozy up with one of these flicks for a look at some of the world’s most romantic resorts.

JAMAICA

Round Hill is no stranger to the Hollywood set (Ralph Lauren owns one of the villas and names like Paul McCartney and Harrison Ford pop up in the guest book) but in 1998 the elegant resort became the setting for How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

The two of you can get in the groove in any of the 27 stylish villas (decorated in Ralph Lauren style, natch) but ask for Villa 11 to create your own Angela Bassett-Taye Diggs moment.

Atlantis Resort’s casinos, elegant guest rooms, and powdery beach made it a perfect setting for the 2004 heist film After the Sunset but, for honeymooners, it’s the movie’s peek into the resort’s one-of-a-kind Bridge Suite, connecting the two high-rise hotel towers, that can’t be missed.

The romantic film starred Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek, who said that watching the film “makes you want to go on vacation”—even if you don’t land the $25,000 a night suite.

Manzanillo’s Las Hadas gave the world a perfect 10 thanks to the Dudley Moore comedy set at this seaside resort.

Although you might remember the 1979 movie for Bo Derek’s famous jog (which took place on the nearby Playa La Audiencia), the two of you can enjoy the hotel’s romantic Moorish style and stop by the Lobby Bar, seen several times in the film, to catch a piano tune (even if it’s not Ravel’s Bolero).

CALIFORNIA

Although the movie was supposedly set in Miami, San Diego’s Hotel del Coronado served as the set for the 1959 Some Like It Hot. Apparently, star Marilyn Monroe did like it hot; when not filming, the actress often sunned on the hotel’s Coronado Island beach, joining the long ranks of both Hollywood names and royalty who have signed this historic hotel’s guest list. Today the two of you can snuggle in your guest room and watch the free in-room showing of the comedic romp.

While all but exterior scenes were shot elsewhere, The Regent Beverly Wilshire is still well known as the Pretty Woman hotel thanks to the 1990 film. Although the two of you might not land a Presidential Suite like the Richard Gere and Julia Roberts characters, you can still channel your inner celebrity with a stroll down the adjacent Rodeo Drive for some power shopping.

FLORIDA

Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau Hilton Resort had been the setting for movies ranging from Goldfinger to Scarface but it was The Bodyguard that in 1992 showed the world the resort’s romantic side. The Governor's Suite served as the backdrop for much of the action, and the hotel’s Tropigala nightclub grooved to a Whitney Houston concert in the film.

HAWAII

The Royal Hawaiian, Honolulu’s “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” makes it very easy for the two of you to enjoy your own From Here to Eternity event, whether it’s a destination wedding or a romantic honeymoon. The hotel offers live wedding broadcasts so you can share the event in true cinematic fashion. Top it all off with your own Burt Lancaster-Deborah Kerr romp in the surf like in the 1953 flick at Kuhio Beach, helpfully renamed the “From Here to Eternity Beach.”
