Peller
Estates Winery, Niagara-on-the-Lake. Founded 40 years ago by
Hungarian immigrant Andrew Peller, this award-winning winery is one
of Niagara's most lauded, especially for its red wines. Guided tours
of the vineyards, underground aging cellar, and more culminate in a
structured tasting of the excellent wines.
During our tour, we learned
that the 80% of all Canadian wines are produced on the Niagara peninsula.
The reason? The ideal microclimate the area enjoys thanks to the Niagara
Escarpment and the moderating influence of Lake Ontario. Located at
the same latitude as Bordeaux, France, the region has proven extremely
popular for wineries, with 16 in Niagara-on-the-Lake alone. Bicyclists
often ride from winery to winery, sampling local production.
Peller also has an excellent
restaurant on-site. Weddings are not held at the winery although they
will host receptions and rehearsal dinners.
