September 2005 - Just
a couple of hours by car from the New York metropolitan area,
the Catskill Region offers couples a country escape year-round,
with activities for even the most active duos. After a day of
adventure--whether that means climbing or canoeing, the two of
you can canoodle in an elegant resort, spa, bed-and-breakfast,
country cabin or campground. Romantic
Adventure #1: Ulster County The Shawangunks, nicknamed
the "Gunks," are located in Ulster County and boast
some of the best climbing in the world. The Gunks
have over 1,000 different climbs that range in technical difficulty
from 5.0 to 5.13. Check with a local
outfitter like Rock
& Snow to support an exhilarating and challenging ascent.
Couples can contact local guides services, such as Alpine
Endeavors or High
Angle Adventures, for instruction and help on planning their
trips. After a multi-pitch
climb, daredevils can head north to Plattekill Mountain for a
technical mountain bike descent down the winter resorts
slopes, which make for excellent riding in the warmer months.
The mountain features more than 60 miles of everything from fast,
open runs to narrow single-track, serviced by the mountains
ski lifts. Plattekill is a classic bike park with some of the
best riding on the East Coast, and was voted one of the Top
five places to ride in the U.S. by Bike Magazine in 2003. Romantic
Adventure #2: Sullivan County Couples who want to
get their feet wet can head west to Landers
River Trips in Sullivan County for canoeing, kayaking, rafting
and tubing down the Delaware River. Sullivan County also
provides some of the best fly-fishing in the region. The Willowemoc
and Beaverkill rivers intersect at Junction Pool in Roscoe, a.k.a.
Trout Town U.S.A., and the Catskill
Fly Fishing Center & Museum is in nearby Livingston Manor.
Baxter
House operates as both a bed and breakfast and as a river
guide outfitter. Their guides have been fishing the regions
waters for more than 25 years and know exactly how the river runs
through it. Romantic
Adventure #3: Delaware County To the north, Delaware
County is also home to fantastic fly-fishing, and one of the best
ways to take advantage of the regions natural resources
and hospitality is with West
Branch Resort. As the name implies, the property is located
directly on the west branch of the Delaware, giving visitors instant
access to fantastic fishing waters and private lodging in studio
and executive log cabins. The resort has teamed
up with local outfitter Grey
Ghost Guides to provide visitors with the opportunity for
the most complete and enjoyable experience possible. For outdoor enthusiasts
for whom the thrill lies in barreling downhill there is the ultimate
need for speed experience at Plattekill
Mountain. Snow season offer excellent downhill and Nordic
skiing as well as snowboarding, and evening tubing. Non-snow season
offers extreme mountain biking and NORBA sanctioned racing on
the ski trails. Romantic

weekend, nothing would be more suitable than a challenging 18
holes before heading back home. For some of the finest golf in
the state, couples should head to Greene
County, home to nine courses, all within a 14-mile radius.
Windham Country Club, a 6,005-yard par-71 course tucked away within
the Catskill Mountains, is a must-play according to
Golf Digest, which rated it with three-and-a-half stars. Blackhead
Mountain Country Club is another fine layout in Greene County,
featuring water hazards, elevated tee boxes and multi-tiered greens,
all carved into the beautiful landscape of the majestic Blackhead
