Alf
Tuohey Proposes During Commonwealth Games Relay
March 2006 -- As
the baton is borne to Melbourne, Australia on March 15, 2006
to mark the opening of the 2006 Commonwealth Games it will symbolize
not only the dreams of the multitude of athletes gathered together
for the opportunity to excel at their chosen sport on a world-wide
stage, but also the hopes of two young lovers who made a pact
to cherish each other forever.
In a journey that
began on March 14, 2005 at Buckingham Palace, the Queen's Baton
Relay traveled through 71 nations before reaching Australia,
where a number of celebrities proudly took part as the baton
was carried through the streets of their homeland.
On March 8, 2006
pop star Alf Tuohey, a member of the band NORTH, who recorded
"I Am Strong," the official song for the 2006 relay,
pounded the pavement in the town of Castlemaine for his leg
of the journey, but while posing for photos with the baton before
it was passed to the next runner the singer/songwriter dropped
to his knees-- not out of exhaustion, but out of love, as he
breathlessly asked his girlfriend of the past two years, Megan
Christiansen, for her hand in marriage.
The couple has not
announced a wedding date.
