Who: Oscar-winning
actress Hilary Swank ("Million Dollar Baby," "Boys
Don't Cry") and actor Chad Lowe ("Life Goes On,"
"ER")
When: September
28, 1997
Where: The
couple said "I do" at a Methodist house of worship
in the Los Angeles area.
The proposal:
American chestnut trees and red maples were silent witnesses
as Chad Lowe asked for Hilary Swank's hand in marriage during
a day's outing at Walden Pond, a serene sanctuary in Concord,
Massachusetts which served as writer Henry David Thoreau's muse
for the book "Walden."
The Ceremony:
A five-year courtship, which began with a chance encounter at
a Hollywood Athletic Club party, led the pair to a Methodist
church for a nondenominational ceremony in which the pair professed
their devotion to one another with self-penned vows.
The Dress:
Although movie buffs are accustomed to seeing the Academy Award-winning
actress in hard-hitting cinematic fare, on her wedding day Hilary
chose an ultrafeminine Alvina Valenta gown with an elaborately
embroidered basque waistline which flowed into a full, French
silk skirt with a tulle overlay. The romantic, off the shoulder
neckline showcased a single strand of pearls, and an elbow-length
veil completed the look.
The groom looked
dapper in a classic black suit paired with a black bow tie and
offset with a pale rose boutonniere.
The Reception:
One hundred and ten guests gathered at Santa Monica's Miramar
Sheraton, where revelers danced to tunes spun by a DJ and sampled
slices of a three-tier wedding cake composed of chocolate, raspberries
and Grand Marnier and lavishly decorated with a virtual garden
of flowers.
