Grenada
Announces Hurricane Recovery Improvements
October 2005 -- Following
a devastating blow by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the Caribbean island
of Grenada has been busy working to reopen hotels and attractions,
adding enhancements to much of the tourist product at the same
time. The "Spice Island of the Caribbean" is looking
forward to greeting visitors this year as the high season fast
approaches.
According to the Grenada Board of Tourism, several attractions
are receiving enhancements including:
- the Grand Etang
National Park's Welcome Center. Planned for completion by the
end of October.
- Belmont Estate
- Leapers Hill. Planned
for completion by December 15 with a gazebo and interpretation
center; a third phase will include the construction of vendors'
booths, a bridge, and footpath.
- Fort Frederick:
New
Tourist Offering
A new addition to
the island's tourism offerings is adventure river tubing. Tourism
Services Limited, a company specializing in Grenada adventure
jeep and mountain biking, is now offering adventure tubing tours
at the Balthazar River. The 60-90 minute tour package is $45
per person and includes equipment, safety briefing and refreshment.
Accommodations
Reopening
Presently 1,087
guest rooms are available for occupancy, approximately 68% of
the room stock on the island. By the end of 2005, 90% of the
pre-Hurricane Ivan room stock will be functional.
- What's Open?
Recent
months have seen the reopening of the renovated Blue Horizons
Garden Resort and the Grenadian by Rex Resorts. The new Ki Ki
Apartments, offering 17 apartments, also debuted recently near
True Blue Bay.
- What's Opening?
Among
those that will commence operations are the newly upgraded 80-room
Coyaba Beach Resort and the 64-room Spice Island Beach Resort.
Cruise
Port
Grenada's cruise
product is also being improved with the second phase of the
new cruise ship port and terminal project that's nearing completion.
The multi-million dollar facility will include duty-free shopping
facilities and other commercial retail outlets.
National
Stadium
Grenada is also
making preparations to host matches during the Cricket World
Cup in 2007. The reconstruction of the National Stadium begins
in October.
Special
Events:
Grenada and Carriacou
will host two wonderful special events in the months to come
including the Cricket Classics, scheduled for October 13 - 18
at Progress Park in St. Andrew, and the Carriacou Parang Festival,
planned for December 16 - 18.
