3112008: Turks & Caicos Resort Announces Wedding Package

For years the Turks and Caicos Islands stayed below the vacation radar, unfamiliar to many travelers other than scuba divers and dedicated beach buffs. The word is quickly getting out on these tropical islands east of the Bahamas, though, thanks to their incredible beaches, growing popularity for celebrity getaways, and convenient location just a short hop from the US.

The islands are also becoming increasingly popular as a wedding destination, whether just for the two of you or for a wedding party. On the Turks and Caicos island of Providenciales, The Tuscany at Grace Bay has announced two wedding packages aimed at either two-person ceremonies or small affairs for up to 12. Select either and you'll enjoy the serene sound of lapping ocean waters, powder white sand between your toes and the soft kiss of the island breeze to accompany your ceremony. The Tuscany at Grace Bay offers all of that plus secluded scenic ceremony locations, luxurious accommodations for couples, family and friends and stress-free wedding packages that make it a natural choice for an ideal seaside celebration.

Just the Two of Us Package: If you're looking for a quiet wedding, this just might be the package for you; it includes:

• Wedding bouquet and groom boutonnière
• One tier wedding cake (serves up to six people)
• Bottle of champagne
• Table decorations for registration table
• Witness (if needed)
• Officiant and all paperwork to make union legal in Turks & Caicos and your resident location
• Federal Express fee to send wedding certificate once paperwork has been processed
Price: $1695
The Intimate Affair Package: This package for up to 12 people includes:

• Tropical flower bouquet and groom boutonnière
• Two tier wedding cake (serves up to 12 people)
• Bottle of champagne
• Background music
• Conch and tiki torch circle of love decoration
• Witness (if needed)
• Officiant and all paperwork to make union legal in Turks & Caicos and your resident location
• Federal Express fee to send wedding certificate once paperwork has been processed

Why It's Dreamy: The resort offers thirty 2,000-square-foot, three-bedroom/three bathroom suites, each distinctly different in ambiance and décor. All units are beachfront and include extended screened patios with first floor villas offering immediate beach access. Home to the pristine 12-mile Grace Bay beach, Turks and Caicos is surrounded by coral reefs and tropical, turquoise waters. The Tuscany is located on Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos, just 15 minutes from Providenciales International Airport.

372008: Butchart Gardens Says I Do to Weddings

In Victoria, British Columbia, The Butchart Gardens has not offered weddings in the gardens since its opening in 1904 -- until now. During the winter indoor garden season of mid-January through the end of March every year, Butchart Gardens will offer weddings as well as wedding photography.

"We have been asked by many people over the years to hold weddings in our garden, and we feel that at this time of year one could not find a more beautiful indoor venue offering such an intimate location of great beauty," said Robin Clarke, owner of The Butchart Gardens. "Areas of our outdoor gardens will also be available for wedding photographs during this time."

You'll find wedding packages for ceremonies of up to sixty people. Options include wedding photographs alone, a ceremony and reception, or a reception or dinner in The Dining Room Restaurant. All packages include indoor and outdoor photo rights. For those choosing to have a ceremony, a two-hour rehearsal time is also included.

2282008: Outdoor Wedding Advice from L'Auberge de Sedona

With our thoughts already on warm weather, we were happy to see this list of outdoor wedding suggestions in our in box. These come from Meghan Rudolph, wedding planner for Arizona's L'Auberge de Sedona:

1. Budget: Have an exact budget or specific dollar amount when you meet with your wedding planner. Make a prioritized list of what is necessary to create your wedding the way you envision it. This will help in deciding between calligraphy invitations and live music. It can be disappointing to make big plans and then have to cancel them because they're not affordable.

2. Date: Planning the date is extremely important. Have several in mind, since popular wedding months such as May, June, September and October may limit the choice of dates. At L'Auberge, which is in Sedona, we recommend winter weddings for better value. They can be spectacular at this time of year.

3. Comfort: Remember to ensure your guests' comfort by considering weather conditions on the big day. If hot, have ushers offer ice-cold water bottles as guests are seated, or print your wedding program on a hand-held fan to keep your guests cool. Colorful paper umbrellas shade the sun and add beautiful color as well.

4. Backup plan: What if it rains? The ideal outdoor wedding location should have an indoor plan just in case. However, an outdoor tent is another option, but only for light to moderate rainstorms. Or, the couple might have the ceremony outside and reception inside as a way to minimize the risk of bad weather.

5. Plan for Wind: Windy conditions can wreak havoc on attire, hair, and décor. If the location is typically windy, avoid fabrics such as chiffons or China silks. Also, advise your hairstylist that your wedding is outdoors so she/he can design an appropriate style for you and the bridal party. While unity ceremonies are important, wind can have an ill effect on the traditional unity candle. More recent ideas include the sand ceremony and water ceremony.

6. Décor: With natural beauty all around, outdoor weddings often use fewer decorations. Some to be considered, however, include an arch or trellis, strings of lights or lanterns in the trees, torches, and luminarias or farolitas. A flower petal walkway dense with deep colored rose petals creates a dramatic contrast to green grass. Note: for weddings on grassy areas, ensure the sprinkler system is disabled so guests don't receive an unwanted shower!

7. Food: At L'Auberge, we recommend a reception with food stations with delicious and beautiful options that are prepared and refreshed on a continual basis. Guests can enjoy the reception without worrying if the food is getting cold or that they'll miss a served food course.

8. Bugs: One way to limit bug disturbances is to use citronella candles. While insects are not typically a concern in Sedona's high dessert, we place citronella candles around the border of the event disguised with red rocks or other natural elements just in case.

9. Sunlight: Couples who consider timing their outdoor wedding to a beautiful sunset should ensure that chairs are oriented away from the sun so it won't shine directly in the eyes of their guests during the ceremony.

10. Attire: If hot weather is in the forecast, wear light fabrics to avoid unnecessary overheating or perspiration. Brides wearing trains should consider the ground they will be walking on to avoid grass and dirt. (An aisle runner can be helpful in avoiding stains.) Consult a makeup professional for makeup that won't cake, streak, or shine and will hold up well for photographs and throughout the event.

We’re seeing more "green hotels" these days, properties that are making a serious effort to be eco-friendly in terms of everything from rooms to restaurants. We just received word that RockResorts, a luxury hotel company that emphasizes the natural settings of its resort locations, is launching a brand-wide “Green Weddings” initiative beginning this summer. From the majestic mountains of Vail to the authentic adobes of Santa Fe, the two of you will now be able to say “I Do” at a RockResort without saying “I Don’t” to Mother Nature.

Green Options: The “Green Weddings” offerings at RockResorts will give you plenty of options from initial planning until the last guest leaves the reception including:

• Suggestions for recycled paper invitations and creatively designed electronic “save the date” announcements
• Resources for the future bride and groom covering preferred vendors for wedding dresses, tuxedos, bridesmaid dresses, etc.
• Opportunities to partner with an environmental non-profit, such as the National Forest Foundation so the two of you can donate money in lieu of extra extravagances such as a Viennese table or cordial bar.
• Availability of environmentally-friendly car, limo and shuttle service to and from the airport and during the wedding and other related events
• Natural, indigenous spa treatments for the wedding party
• Access to community-based volunteer projects in the surrounding region for family and guests to partake in.

• Eco-friendly table centerpieces
• Organic wines and beers, focusing on unique regional and local offerings
• The use of organic and locally-grown and produced food for menu options
• Organic wedding cake and other confections
• Suggestions on eco-friendly wedding favors

Environmentally Engaged Program: Not ready to tie the knot just yet? RockResorts is also offering an “Environmentally Engaged” program for those who are still on their way to tying the green knot. Couples planning their ceremony at any of the properties will be guided by the hotel’s event planning staff and supplied with green wedding planning resources that include various eco-friendly tips, such as information on vendors who supply environmentally-friendly wedding gowns and tuxedos, photographers and entertainment.

12062007: New San Juan Wedding Planning Website

You know how much we love destination weddings in the Caribbean thanks to both their beauty and their simplicity when it comes to planning. Weddings in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are even easier for American travelers since you and your guests won't need passports.

We've learned of a new website about San Juan, Puerto Rico weddings launched by the wedding specialists at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. The San Juan Marriott Resort designed www.sanjuanweddings.com to serve wedding planners and do-it-yourself brides alike in order to help streamline the destination wedding planning process and provide all the initial information at their fingertips. The site, which just launched, takes visitors from appetizers to accommodations and flowers to facilities, all in one easy to navigate location.

“Planning a wedding can be a challenge regardless of the location. Hosting approximately 60 weddings a year, we understand the intricacies and have created a great tool to bring our knowledge of weddings all to one place - just type in the web address and de-stress,” commented Omar Negron, Associate Director of Catering Sales at the San Juan Marriott. “The site takes users direct to our RFP forms, provides sample menus, visuals, info about our chefs, direct links to book hotel rooms, wedding planning checklists and more.”

While the San Juan Marriott Resort’s experienced, certified wedding planners can arrange every detail of the special day, the site also includes a list of experienced local vendors--cake makers, florists, photographers, videographers and more.

The San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation and provides guests newly designed, luxurious guest rooms and suites, a full casino, invigorating spa, two elaborate swimming pools, meeting facilities, six dining options and a lobby lounge for nighttime entertainment. Experience a tropical beachfront setting, picture perfect views along the Atlantic Ocean, multiple sundecks packed with palm trees, a swim up bar and so much more. 10112007: What Will Be Hot for Destination Weddings in 2008?

It's no surprise that destination weddings are more popular than ever before, with couples definitely saying "I Do" to unique ceremonies at locations around the world. What might be surprising, though, are some of the forecasts for next year's destination wedding trends. LUXE Destination Weddings, a high-end consulting company focusing on custom weddings at the most exclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico, has just released their list of the top destination wedding trend predictions for 2008. "Destination weddings are no longer a one-size-fits-all affair," says co-founder Tara Soloway. "With all the different trends, tastes and temperaments out there, we know destination weddings for 2008 will be anything but ordinary!"

LUXE Destination Weddings top trends for 2008:

1. Brazen Beach Bridal Shoots

It's a new phenomenon in destination weddings ˆ brazen beach bridal shoots!

"Many destination brides want killer photos, capturing the essence of their colorful surroundings," says Soloway. "Create something extraordinary and cherish the bold action as a keepsake."

Whether seeking edgy, classy or sexy looks, couples are diving into the ocean or pool, heading into neighboring towns to mingle, or scaling cliffs by sea bluffs.

Daring photo shoots offer brides the chance to create a bold statement with their dress, rather than store it away for eternity. As many opt for more casual wear or a lighter, less intricate design, there's no pressure to keep the dress pristine (although you can opt for restoring afterwards). So jump into the water. Roll around on the beach. Dance with the locals. And take home an audacious wedding album for the ages.

2. Go Green For Weddings

Green weddings top many a wedding list. Couples are asking: How will their footprints leave a mark?

"Green weddings may be trendy, but it's also a great way for couples to incorporate deeper meaning into their big day," says Soloway.

Counteract travel with carbon-offsetting companies. LUXE recommends Climatecare.org and Offsetters.ca. Guests can calculate travel miles and donate a percentage back to the environment.

Incorporate local products into the ceremony. Many Caribbean islands offer an abundance of flowers like dendrobium orchids, lilies, and anthuriums. The "Natural Look," is growing in popularity LUXE advises -- branches with blossoms, greenery, palm leaves, burlaps and sandy hues.

LUXE offers further green wedding tips:

· Ban plastic water bottles.
· Research local recycling and environmental practices. Or be an environmental revolutionary! Teach the hotel about green practices.
· Pre-print dinner menus, programs, etc. on recycled paper.
· Consider the romance of candle light as a great way to conserve energy during the ceremony.
· Ditch wedding favors.

3. Entrances for the Ages

Tradition tends to go out the window when it comes to destination weddings. As such, LUXE is setting trends with their clients' wedding entrances.

"As beaches become the go-to destination, we find that the sky is the limit with our events," says Soloway. "Many brides want to make a splash with a grand entrance!"

Brides can be paddled to their ceremony at in a rowboat at sunset, or arrive on horseback in dramatic fashion. Evoke Cleopatra and be carried in on a chair or bed by four groomsmen, following a parade of walking singers and musicians. It's the first step in your new life -- make it memorable!

4. Make Wedding Scents

LUXE Destination Weddings thrives on creating exotic weddings that delight all bodily senses - even the sense of smell!

"Something as delicate as a customized scent can truly uplift the ceremony," Soloway advises.

LUXE suggests an array of enticing aromas at many of the luxurious resorts where its weddings are held, including the new Eurostars Blue -- Tulum Hotel & Spa in Riviera Maya, Mexico and The Caves in Negril, Jamaica.

From lavender to neroli, to vanilla and jasmine, the betrothed can pick and choose the scents that perfectly capture the mood of their nuptials, aided by the watchful guidance of LUXE's expert coordinators. LUXE's advice on wedding scents will help make the perfect finishing touch for a couple's perfectly planned destination wedding.

08292007: Tips for Destination Brides on What to Wear

We're always receiving questions from brides planning tropical weddings with questions about appropriate attire. Long or short? Traditional or tropical?

We've just received some really helpful tips from Toronto-based Luxe Destination Weddings, which specializes in organizing sophisticated destination weddings, on what to wear to your destination wedding. "There are considerations a bride might not have at a wedding at home," says Tara Soloway of Luxe Destination Weddings. "Not too many brides here have to worry about salt water and sand when posing for photographs!"

Tips for the Destination Bride

1) Go with light, flowy material which will breathe well, preferably without long sleeves, says Soloway. Avoid heavy fabrics like velvets. Bridal boutiques such as Queen Street West's Lowon Pope can suggest appropriate fabrics and styles.

2) Consider going to shorter or cocktail length. Salt and sand can play havoc with fabrics, especially when you are walking close to the water's edge. "If you're a bride with your heart set on a full-length gown and train, be prepared for it to show some wear and tear!" counsels Soloway.

3) Speaking of dress length, you must also consider footwear. High heels might not be appropriate as the terrain might be uneven, or you will be walking on long stretches of beach or lawn. Consider low-heeled sandals, cute flip flops, classic ballet flats or even the barefoot look.

4) For many brides, keeping the dress a secret until the big day is important. Most resorts will hide it away for you, and many will steam it as well.

5) And for him? Think whites and beiges, linens and light cottons. It's best to avoid black tuxes, formal morning suits, and heavy sports coats, all of which can be unbearably hot in a tropical climate.

08172007: New Zealand Inn Offers Destination Weddings Package

Looking for something a little off the beaten path for your destination wedding? A place that will provide you with wedding pictures different than any your friends have?

Check out New Zealand's Otahuna Lodge. Tucked away on 30 acres, this historic home with gingerbread trim, stained glass windows and picturesque terraces, just like a wedding cake, conjures up notions of the ultimate storybook wedding retreat for friends and family. Inside the allure continues, with lovely rooms featuring woodburning fireplaces, ornate hand carved details and an intimate Ballroom decked out with a turn-of-the century fireplace and a rustic beamed cathedral ceiling.

Located just outside of Christchurch on the South Island, the exclusive seven-room Lodge is available for private destination weddings that appeal to those seeking privacy and a truly rare setting in one of the world’s most undisputedly romantic and captivating destinations.

Not just the happy couple but their guests too will be enchanted by the romantic essence that pervades Otahuna and here a wedding is an experience that can be shaped around particular preferences and dreams. An early September wedding, for instance, will have a golden glow to it as nearly one million daffodils burst forth in Otahuna’s private parkland. Vows might be exchanged in the Dutch Garden with its canopy of flowering trees, lavender and boxwood lanes while pictures might be posed for on a “Monet inspired” arched white bridge that crosses the small lake in front of the Lodge. The wedding couple may make a dramatic departure by helicopter from the lawn in front of the three story homestead and guests might soak up the atmosphere further by strolling through the gardens, through sun-dappled glades and along languid wooded paths.

With a dedicated staff of twelve at the guests’ disposal, Otahuna Lodge offers exceptional facilities, outstanding dining under New Zealand Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre along with complete Concierge service and wonderful attention to detail at every turn. Wedding parties who rent Otahuna can enjoy individually decorated guest rooms and suites with original New Zealand art, a formal Dining Room, a stylishly relaxed Kitchen for informal meals, a Drawing Room, a fully-stocked Library and even a Ballroom if a festive party is desired. Social activity also leads outdoors, where a swimming pool, tennis court, outdoor Jacuzzi, outdoor fireplace and grilling station, walking paths, a Dutch garden, an orchard and an organic vegetable garden can be found. A fitness room and spa treatment room are also available.

Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre, a nationally regarded New Zealand born chef, will personally work with each wedding couple on their wedding reception menu and any pre and post parties that are hosted at the Lodge. Exquisite floral displays by Louise Heller of Bloom Flower Design can also be arranged.

For those who wish to have an itinerary designed for their visiting wedding guests, native New Zealander, Tim Ogle (the only member of the Clefs D’Or -- the prestigious international association of concierges – at a lodge property in the country) can arrange for a truly exclusive one of a kind experience. Whether that be scootering around the scenic roads of the South Island, a helicopter trip from Otahuna to the Waipara wine region of New Zealand, a private visit to a ‘Marae’ (the gathering retreat of New Zealand’s original inhabitants, the Maoris) or a day of fly fishing on a remote river, Tim can create an experience long remembered.

Price: The cost to rent Otahuna from April 1-September 30 is NZD $5740 (US $4250) per night plus tax and from October 1 – March 31 is NZD $9600 (US $7150) per night plus tax. This includes daily cocktails and canapés, five-course degustation dinners with wine pairings, and cooked and/or continental breakfast. Separate pricing will be available for additional details involved in wedding planning.

Why it's Dreamy:
Otahuna Lodge is one of New Zealand's premier destination retreats. Re-opened on May 1, 2007 following a significant, four-month renovation undertaken by new owners, American-born Hall Cannon and Miles Refo, Otahuna Lodge is located on the South Island. Just 20 minutes from Christchurch, Otahuna features seven guest suites, a 30-acre garden, heated pool, Jacuzzi, tennis court and fitness facility with a spa treatment room. The Lodge, built in 1895, was home to leading New Zealand parliamentarian, Sir Heaton Rhodes for more than 60 years. Otahuna is regarded as the finest example of Queen Anne architecture in Australasia.

Celebrity Wedding Planner and Mandarin Oriental Team Up

Looking for expert help with your wedding dress search? Mandarin Oriental, New York and celebrity wedding planner Marcy Blum have teamed up to create the Bridal Dress Quest Package.

The package gives mother-daughter, or the bride-to-be and her best friend, the chance to enjoy a day of guided “dress quest” shopping with Marcy Blum, the foremost wedding and party planner on the East Coast. Blum's client list includes socialites and celebrities from the Rockefeller family to the rocker Billy Joel.

The Package: The package begins with a phone consultation with Marcy Blum to tailor the dress quest experience to the bride’s individual taste.

On the actual day, a Mercedes sedan will transport the “questers” around Manhattan for six hours of personalized shopping with Marcy to top wedding gown designers and stores. Brides can try on the edgy designs of Selia Yang, the custom gowns of Lara-Helene, the eclectic collections of Mark Ingram’s The Bridal Atelier, and the classic styles of Vera Wang – all personal, long-time contacts of Marcy’s. A break for lunch at Marcy’s private club, SoHo House, is also included.

After a day of shopping, a night of pampering awaits at Mandarin Oriental, New York, with luxurious accommodation in a Central Park View Suite and an indulgent two-hour Spa treatment for two in the hotel’s acclaimed Five-Star spa.

To top off the experience, Marcy will select a gift from the new Spoylt Bryde by Marcy Blum Collection. Spoylt Lingerie is the maker of hand crafted, haute couture intimates based in London.

“New York City is the best place for a bride to look for her dream dress because of the incredible variety and talent available in this city,” states Marcy Blum. “Shopping for a wedding gown should and can be a magical experience -- a part of a bride’s fondest memories during this special time in her life. It can also be a very wonderful bonding experience for the bride and her mother, or for her and a close friend. The Dress Quest package we’ve created with Mandarin Oriental, New York brings all the components together to successfully create a memory of a lifetime.”

For the multi-tasking bride-to-be, an additional Marcy Blum “day of beauty” can be added for hair and make-up consultations with professionals from Marcy’s personal list of New York’s finest stylists and make-up artists.

The Price: The Bridal Dress Quest Package rate is $5,350 plus tax and service charges. The incremental cost of an additional day of beauty with a second night of accommodation at Mandarin Oriental, New York can be added based on prevailing hotel rates.

About Marcy Blum: Marcy Blum Associates was founded in 1987 as a corporate event planning company. Marcy’s talents led her to specialize in creating unforgettable weddings and high profile society events. She's appeared as a wedding and event expert on The Today Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, Oprah , Good Morning America, and was recently a guest judge on Top Chef. Designer Launches Destination Wedding Dress Collection

Destination brides have special needs when it comes to a wedding dress including portability and the ability to match the atmosphere of the destination with the style of the dress. We're seeing more designers taking destination weddings into consideration these days with dresses especially made for their special day.

"The bride will want to consider the length and style of the gown when selecting a dress for her destination wedding. The dress can set the tone for the entire occasion, and she wants to look effortless, yet elegant," says Michael Shettel, head designer for Alfred Angelo. "Today's destination bride is searching for the perfect take-along wedding dress that will travel easily, while reflecting the bride's individual personality and style."

The 2007 Destiny Collection from Alfred Angelo features dresses for destination brides. This year, trends range from the whimsical baby doll look with an empire waist to gorgeous goddess gowns accented with jeweled straps. Lace tiers offer a fluid look that will make her appear as if she is floating on air. Hemlines range from above the knee to tea-length to long and flowing styles.

The trend hasn't overlooked bridesmaid. "Bridesmaid dresses have come a long way," says Shettel. "Short dresses are especially popular for weddings on location."

Alfred Angelo is unveiling a sneak peek at their 2007 collection online at http://www.alfredangelo.com. This fall, you can see even more styles from Alfred Angelo at Alfred Angelo On Tour events throughout the country.

Alfred Angelo gowns are available in over 1,000 bridal shops nationwide and at 33 Alfred Angelo designer-owned stores. Every style is available in sizes 2-28W in short, tall and regular length and shades of white and ivory. Trains can be extended on most styles and many designs are available.

    Beaches Adds Unity Sand Ceremony

Beaches Resorts, which offers the FamilyMoons™ package (an extension of the WeddingMoons™ concept), has now added the Unity Sand Ceremony. Starting July 1 at all four Beaches Resorts in Jamaica and the Turks & Caicos, the Unity Sand Ceremony will symbolize with Caribbean white sand the coming together of two families into one.

The Ceremony: Brides, grooms and their respective children each receive beautiful nesting vases, with the side vessels representing each of the family members and the center vessel – their new family. Each member takes turns pouring sand into the common center vessel, physically representing the union of “two into one.” Just as it is impossible to separate the grains of sand in the vase, it will be impossible to separate the new family.

Wedding Buyout at Antigua's Jumby Bay

Don't like the thought of other guests at a resort during your wedding? There's a solution: a bridal buyout. It's an expensive option but an ultra-private one, offering the entire resort for your and your guests on your special day.

Antigua's Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort, offers a three-night bethrothal buyout package starting at $150,000, plus taxes and service. The package is available only from May to early December.
