04152008: Princess Cruises Names Greatest Romantic

You'll remember the Princess Cruises contest we announced earlier this year; they were searching for the greatest romantic. Well, a decision has been made after a nationwide search. Father of four and minister Phil Roberts of Lexington, Kentucky was crowned with the title after nearly 100 romantic hopefuls across the country submitted heartfelt videos nominating themselves or someone in their lives for the honor. The line's Department of Romance experts narrowed the field to five finalists, and then thousands of people voted for their favorite entry.

Roberts personally received the news this morning from "Love Boat" star Gavin MacLeod ("Captain Stubing"), who is also part of Princess' Department of Romance. "I was shocked and amazed when I picked up the phone this morning," said Roberts. "First, I was so excited to win the contest and I'm truly touched that America felt my video and story was romantic enough to receive this honor. Then, to hear Gavin MacLeod on the other end giving me the good news - I was stunned! The entry deadline was the 10-year anniversary of my proposal to my wife Lisa, and what better way to honor this special memory than to win a contest that helped me pay tribute to my wife and family."

"I just loved Phil's video and his story, and I'm so glad the public felt the same way," said MacLeod. "His entry had it all - it was touching, emotional, creative and truly romantic." The other department members include Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the always-provocative couples therapist; Alex Michel, the first "Bachelor" on ABC's hit show; Trish McDermott, vice president of love at Engage.com; and Lisa Light, destination wedding expert and author.

The Winning Entry: Roberts' winning entry, which he titled "The Greatest Romantic???," received a large majority of the votes. In the cleverly produced video, Roberts nominated himself with a creative and touching poem narrated by his 3-year-old daughter, Ashley. The 37-year-old shared the ups-and-downs and joys of his nine-year marriage to his wife, Lisa, and said that romance has always been the core of their relationship. After learning that Lisa had always dreamt of becoming engaged at the ocean, Roberts created a beach scene in his apartment in Ohio, complete with a thousand pounds of sand, stars in the sky and a fluorescent beach scene painted on the walls.

With four children, the Roberts don't get a lot of opportunities for date nights. But one way that they spend quality and rewarding time together is through monthly meetings with families of premature babies at the Lexington Ronald McDonald House. Their work also supports their charity, Project Seashore www.projectsseashore.org, created in memory of their daughter, Emily, who passed away at birth. Winning this Princess cruise will be their first real vacation without their children.

After Roberts is officially inducted into Princess' Department of Romance, his story, advice and podcast will be featured on www.princess.com/romance. Along with his role as a romance ambassador, he will also receive a seven-day cruise for two to the Caribbean or the Mexican Riviera, so he can truly celebrate with the love of his life.

2142008: Princess Cruises Launches Search for Greatest Romantic

Valentine's Day was a natural for the launch of the nationwide search by Princess Cruises asking "Are You the Greatest Romantic?" The contest is part of the new website section for the company’s Department of Romance.

“Who better than the ‘Love Boat’ line to search for the greatest romantic?” asked Gavin MacLeod, the actor who played the series’ Captain Stubing. “’The Love Boat’ and Princess celebrated romance during every show for its 10-year run. And now as the show commemorates its 30-year anniversary, what a fitting celebration of love on the high seas.”

MacLeod is one of the members of Princess’ Department of Romance, which also includes experts Trish McDermott, “Vice President of Love” for Engage.com and former “Vice President of Romance” for Match.com; provocative couples therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer; and Lisa Light, destination wedding expert and author. Together they will select the five most inspiring finalists before the vote is put out to the general public.

The Contest: Starting today, Princess invites all romantics to submit a video telling why they deserve this honor. Videos can be entered until March 20, and then from April 1-14 the five finalists will be posted and the general public will have the chance to vote for their favorite “Greatest Romantic.”

Videos should be no longer than three minutes and convey why the person is the ultimate romantic. Contestants can nominate themselves, a spouse, friend or relative but can enter only once and must be at least 21 years of age. All videos become property of Princess Cruises. For a complete list of rules and video requirements, as well as sample video entries for romantic inspiration, visit http://greatestromantic.princess.com.

The Winner: “The Greatest Romantic” will be chosen from entries narrowed down to five finalists determined by the line’s Department of Romance experts. After a public vote, he or she will become an “ambassador of love” for the department for one full year, in addition to receiving a romantic cruise for two.

The winner will be announced on April 15 and receive a romantic, seven-day cruise for two to Mexico or the Caribbean, including airfare. While onboard they will receive a special romantic couple’s package from Lotus Spa. “The Greatest Romantic” will also enjoy a year-long title of Princess’ “ambassador of love” as a member of its Department of Romance. They will be featured on the company’s website telling their story, offering advice and discussing romance on a special podcast.

A Second Contest: At the same time, Princess is also conducting a sweepstakes giving one of the contest voters a chance to win their own romantic cruise for two. Visitors to the contest website during the voting period can sign up for a chance to win a seven-day cruise for two to the Caribbean or the Mexican Riviera. Other contest prizes include chocolates from Godivia Chocolatier, pampering products from Princess’ Lotus Spa, and flowers from Teleflora.
