Sideways Lovers Wine Tour Celebrates Movie’s 10th Anniversary

Soul mates with a shared love of cinema and sightseeing are invited to drink in the beauty of the Santa Ynez Valley as Grapeline Wine Tours hosts visits to the various vineyards that starred in the Academy Award-winning dramedy Sideways.

Film fans will first cluster at Foxen Winery, where Miles (portrayed by Paul Giamatti) and Jack (played by Thomas Haden Church) help themselves to full glasses of wine when the tasting room attendant’s eyes are diverted. Offering a number of photo opportunities, the “tasting shack,” which is now known as “foxes 7200,” features small production and sustainably-farmed Bordeaux and Cal-Ital-style wines using a “minimalist” winemaking approach.

Big screen buffs can drink a toast to Sideways‘ 10th anniversary year as they continue in the footsteps of Miles and Jack with a stop at Blackjack Ranch, which offers a flight of 11 wines in its California rustic-inspired tasting room.

Connoisseurs of the grape can continue to quench their thirst for knowledge about their favorite road trip movie at Kalyra Winery, where Miles and Jack met Stephanie, a flirtatious tasting room assistant (brought to life on the big screen by Sandra Oh) who becomes the object of Jack’s affection. The winery, whose name is a translation from the Australian Aboriginal meaning ‘A Wild & Pleasant Place,’ will uncork pleasant movie memories as guests sample wines from the bar seen in Sideways after they savor a catered lunch from Panino Restaurant in Kalyra’s full-length deck.

Along with an array of wineries, the Grapeline Wine Tour will also stop for a photo op at a little-known filming location– the oak tree when’re Jack faked a car crash to account for Miles’ broken nose, and pay a visit to Ostrich Land, Solvang’s 33-acre home to 50 free-roaming emus and ostriches which was seen during two scenes in Sideways— on a drive to a picnic and when Jack gets acquainted with the flightless birds on his “run” from Buellton to Solvang.

Founded in Temecula in 2002, Grapeline Wine Tours expanded to Paso Robles in 2004 and Santa Barbara in 2007, and now serves more than 25,000 wine tasters every year.

The Sideways Lovers Wine Tour departs at 10am from all local hotels and concludes at approximately 4pm. It is available for small private groups of 10-14 guests and pricing is $249 per person from Solvang and Buellton or $269 per person from Santa Barbara, all inclusive. This tour can be booked any day of the week. Reservations are required.
