Much of America may still be clutched in winter’s grip, but the globe-trotting dreams of traveling twosomes have begun to thaw thanks to the Sports Illustrated 2013 Swimsuit issue, which is on sale now.
If the sight of bikni-clad models Cintia Dicker, Adaora and Emily Didonato striking poses in the south African paradise known as the ‘Land of Endless Horizons’ makes you see a visit to Namibia on your horizon, here’s a list of some of the locations captured on camera:
- Sossusvlei: Translated as ‘dead end marsh,’ the world’s highest dunes are alive with color as they rise in shades of orange and red from the floor of the Namib Desert in the Sossusvlei area. Adventurous souls can trek to the top of the infamous ‘Big Daddy’ dune or drift above these monolithic mounds of orange sand on a hot air balloon safari.
- Deadvlei: A forest frozen in time, the skeletons of 900 year-old camelthorn sit on a white sandy floor framed by Sossusvlei’s iconic orange dunes.
- Swakopmund’s Coastal Dunes: Adrenalin seekers leave their impressions in the towering dunes outside the coastal hamlet of Swakopmund as they take to the slopes to sand board and ski.
- Wolwedans Dunes Lodge: Located in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, this property features nine chalets that offer sweeping 360-degree views of the surrounding Namib Desert. Guests can enjoy hot air balloon experiences, scenic drives to the dunes, or a relaxing afternoon by the pool.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sports Illustrated, the 2013 swimsuit issue offers a golden opportunity to take a virtual trip to all seven continents. For a behind the scenes look at all of the photo shoots, tune in to The Travel Channel special SI Swimsuit 2013, airing February 17th at 8/7c.
