Dirty Dancing Festivals Take Place in August

Cinema-loving soul mates will soon have the time of their lives at two August homages to a movie that continues to waltz away with our hearts– Dirty Dancing.

Since the festival’s start in 2010 fans have enjoyed the romantic allure of Lake Lure, and on August 17th the waters will once again reflect the faces of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey during a free lakeside screening of the contemporary classic at Morse Park Meadows.

The festival will be in full swing the following day with dance performances; Cha Cha, Merengue, Mambo, Charleston and Salsa lessons; games for all ages and the chance to make a big splash by performing Johnny and Baby’s signature move in a lake lift competition.

Admission: $20 at the door or $15 in advance

When: August 17 – 18, 2012 (movie screening on the 17th from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.; 9: a.m. – 4 p.m. on the 18th)

Pearisburg, Virginia is also paying homage to the cult classic with its 1st annual Dirty Dancing Festival. August 11th will be  a salute to Swayze, with donations and a portion of the proceeds from a 1 1/2 hour film location tour (complete with a visit to the Mountain Lake Hotel and the Swayze Memorial Stone) benefiting the American Cancer Society.

As the old saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and fans can show their Dirty Dancing devotion in a log dance contest, a Johnny and Baby Look-A-Like Contest, dance competitions and a trivia contest to test your knowledge of the silver screen treasure.

Admission: Prices range from $5 for children between the ages of 6 – 15 and $10 for an adult ticket to $75 for a family package.
