08302007: Win a Signed Diana Tribute Book

We've launched a new contest on Lovetripper; the winner will win a boxed copy of the memorial speech given at the funeral of Princess Diana, written and autographed by her brother, Charles, 9th Earl Spencer. It is bound in 100% silk.

This boxed set is sold only at Althorp, Diana's childhood home. We purchased it during a visit to Althorp, a time when her brother was on property and signing books.

Today Althorp is a celebration of Diana's life with a museum which includes her famous wedding dress; exhibits trace the life of the woman who caught the public attention as a shy bride and through the years was transformed into the queen of people's hearts.

To enter the contest, visit our Contest Page at www.lovetripper.com/contest.html

08292007: Tips for Destination Brides on What to Wear

We're always receiving questions from brides planning tropical weddings with questions about appropriate attire. Long or short? Traditional or tropical?

We've just received some really helpful tips from Toronto-based Luxe Destination Weddings, which specializes in organizing sophisticated destination weddings, on what to wear to your destination wedding. "There are considerations a bride might not have at a wedding at home," says Tara Soloway of Luxe Destination Weddings. "Not too many brides here have to worry about salt water and sand when posing for photographs!"

Tips for the Destination Bride

1) Go with light, flowy material which will breathe well, preferably without long sleeves, says Soloway. Avoid heavy fabrics like velvets. Bridal boutiques such as Queen Street West's Lowon Pope can suggest appropriate fabrics and styles.

2) Consider going to shorter or cocktail length. Salt and sand can play havoc with fabrics, especially when you are walking close to the water's edge. "If you're a bride with your heart set on a full-length gown and train, be prepared for it to show some wear and tear!" counsels Soloway.

3) Speaking of dress length, you must also consider footwear. High heels might not be appropriate as the terrain might be uneven, or you will be walking on long stretches of beach or lawn. Consider low-heeled sandals, cute flip flops, classic ballet flats or even the barefoot look.

4) For many brides, keeping the dress a secret until the big day is important. Most resorts will hide it away for you, and many will steam it as well.

5) And for him? Think whites and beiges, linens and light cottons. It's best to avoid black tuxes, formal morning suits, and heavy sports coats, all of which can be unbearably hot in a tropical climate.

Help Us Identify This Castle

We received this letter from a reader yesterday:

I came across your website, and am hoping you can help me out. I am trying to discover the location in the attached photo? It is not the best quality photo, but there is definitely a castle/tower in the background with this rather unusual garden. I think it is somewhere in the UK, but I just cannot seem to find it. Any information would be gratefully received.

We can't identify this castle...but we're hoping one of our readers can! If you have an idea of where this castle might be or, even better, if you know the name, please email us at editors@lovetripper.com . Thanks!

08272007: Punta Cana Wedding Question

Hi: We are going to be staying at the Club Med Punta Cana for a week in January, 2008, and thought we might get married at Casa de Campo or a church (we are not Catholic) while we were there. It would be just a small group of 5 adults and a baby. Do you have any suggestions? I have called Club Med but they haven't responded and it might be nicer off of the property. Thank you. Judith

Dear Judith,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Casa de Campo is a lovely resort in the La Romana area (not too far from Punta Cana). Close to Casa de Campo in the Altos de Chavon complex, the St Stanislaus Church is a beautiful spot for a wedding. Here’s a slide show of the church. The church and the Altos de Chavon complex (which includes restaurants and shops and is built like an historic village, all overlooking the Chavon River), is administered by Casa de Campo.

We’d suggest hiring a local wedding planner (or checking again with the one at the Club Med...or Casa de Campo will be able to help, too.) To marry in the DR, you’ll need to have your paperwork officially translated into Spanish and there are a few extra forms such as proof of single status that you’ll need to provide. It’s all pretty straightforward and a wedding planner will be able to help; you’ll just want to start early.

Best wishes!! Paris and John

08262007: Walk in Jennifer Lopez's Footsteps with El Cantante Package

If you enjoyed the recent El Cantante movie (or you just want to walk in the footsteps of stars Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony), check out the new package from Travelworm.com which honors the late salsero, Hector Lavoe.

The journey begins with a first class ticket to New York City, where guests will take a tour of Lavoe’s Bronx neighborhood and visit Fania Records. In the city, guests will also have a chance to attend a salsa concert with famed promoter, Ralph Mercado – the promoter who organized Lavoe’s famous last concert in Puerto Rico. Guests will also be treated to authentic Puerto Rican cuisine at the Manhattan restaurant Sofrito.

After two days in New York, travelers will be whisked off first class to Puerto Rico, the birthplace of Lavoe. Fans will stay at the Regency Hotel Condado, the same hotel Lavoe and his wife Puchi stayed while performing for the last time in Puerto Rico. On a private tour during the day, guests will walk through the streets of Ponce, the city where the music star was born and raised and visit the gravesites of him and his family.

For real Lavoe fans, the package would not be complete without a visit to a babalao – a supreme priest of the religion Santeria. The travelers will receive counsel and advice from one of Puerto Rico’s most famous and respected babalaos while on their Puerto Rican style journey. As a parting gift, the babalao will bless a white bead necklace which is said to “open doors of opportunity and remove all obstacles.” The adventure ends with a first class flight back to the traveler’s destination choice.

Budget Package: If you're on a tighter budget, you can opt for a lower priced Lavoe Package that includes a stay at the Regency Hotel Condado, round trip first class tickets to Puerto Rico and a CD of Lavoe’s greatest hits.

08222007: Agua Resort in DR Reports Business as Usual

More good news continues to arrive in the wake of Hurricane Dean. We've heard from Agua Resort & Spa, located in the Dominican Republic's exclusive Uvero Alto region near Punta Cana, that it is business as usual at the resort.

"We had no loss of electricity or any issues, just rain for about two hours throughout the storm on Saturday," said General Manager Domingo Castro. "Our in house guests are happy and it's business as usual."

We had the pleasure of visiting Agua Resort and Spa this May; this is the DR's newest luxury resort. Located just 25 miles from the Punta Cana International Airport in Uvero Alto, the 53-suite property was conceived in Dominican style and designed by the prestigious Dominican architect, Antonio Segundo Imbert, who created such projects as the Beach Club at Cap Cana and the home of musical artist, Julio Iglesias.

08192007: St. Lucia Back In Business

As we sit and watch weather reports chronicling Hurricane Dean's progress toward Jamaica, some good news has come in from the Caribbean: St. Lucia (which experienced Dean just days ago) is back in business:

NEW YORK (August 18, 2007) – The eye of Hurricane Dean spared St. Lucia's tourism infrastructure from its wrath. It glanced past north of the island as a Category 2 storm this week.

Director of Tourism Maria Fowell reported today that the airports in the north and in the south of the island were open for business, and American Eagle has resumed flights to George F. L. Charles Airport with additional services scheduled to move delayed passengers between San Juan, Puerto Rico and the island.

Fowell added that all roads affected by landslides have now been cleared and are passable, facilitating access between the north and south. Additionally, electricity has been restored and businesses resumed operations on Saturday.

Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Senator Allen Chastanet reported that government authorities are making admirable progress cleaning up debris littered throughout the island. Similarly, hoteliers have reported no significant damage to their properties as they complete the clean-up this weekend.

“We are pleased to announce that St. Lucia is indeed open for business, and we have already welcomed new visitors from Europe, North America and the Caribbean,” said Chastanet.

Senator Chastanet, who also is chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, added “Our prayers are with our brothers and sisters in the Eastern Caribbean who have been affected by this storm and those in the Central and Western Caribbean who are preparing for its passage over the next few days.”

Maria Fowell, who is en route to the Midwestern United States to promote St. Lucia’s tourism offerings to travel agents, said, “We’re thankful that the island is back to full operational capacity, due in part to the spirit of the St. Lucian people and the fact that the hurricane passed the island in its early stages.”

She too empathized with her Caribbean neighbors and prayed for minimal loss of life and property in the ensuing days.

08172007: New Zealand Inn Offers Destination Weddings Package

Looking for something a little off the beaten path for your destination wedding? A place that will provide you with wedding pictures different than any your friends have?

Check out New Zealand's Otahuna Lodge. Tucked away on 30 acres, this historic home with gingerbread trim, stained glass windows and picturesque terraces, just like a wedding cake, conjures up notions of the ultimate storybook wedding retreat for friends and family. Inside the allure continues, with lovely rooms featuring woodburning fireplaces, ornate hand carved details and an intimate Ballroom decked out with a turn-of-the century fireplace and a rustic beamed cathedral ceiling.

Located just outside of Christchurch on the South Island, the exclusive seven-room Lodge is available for private destination weddings that appeal to those seeking privacy and a truly rare setting in one of the world’s most undisputedly romantic and captivating destinations.

Not just the happy couple but their guests too will be enchanted by the romantic essence that pervades Otahuna and here a wedding is an experience that can be shaped around particular preferences and dreams. An early September wedding, for instance, will have a golden glow to it as nearly one million daffodils burst forth in Otahuna’s private parkland. Vows might be exchanged in the Dutch Garden with its canopy of flowering trees, lavender and boxwood lanes while pictures might be posed for on a “Monet inspired” arched white bridge that crosses the small lake in front of the Lodge. The wedding couple may make a dramatic departure by helicopter from the lawn in front of the three story homestead and guests might soak up the atmosphere further by strolling through the gardens, through sun-dappled glades and along languid wooded paths.

With a dedicated staff of twelve at the guests’ disposal, Otahuna Lodge offers exceptional facilities, outstanding dining under New Zealand Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre along with complete Concierge service and wonderful attention to detail at every turn. Wedding parties who rent Otahuna can enjoy individually decorated guest rooms and suites with original New Zealand art, a formal Dining Room, a stylishly relaxed Kitchen for informal meals, a Drawing Room, a fully-stocked Library and even a Ballroom if a festive party is desired. Social activity also leads outdoors, where a swimming pool, tennis court, outdoor Jacuzzi, outdoor fireplace and grilling station, walking paths, a Dutch garden, an orchard and an organic vegetable garden can be found. A fitness room and spa treatment room are also available.

Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre, a nationally regarded New Zealand born chef, will personally work with each wedding couple on their wedding reception menu and any pre and post parties that are hosted at the Lodge. Exquisite floral displays by Louise Heller of Bloom Flower Design can also be arranged.

For those who wish to have an itinerary designed for their visiting wedding guests, native New Zealander, Tim Ogle (the only member of the Clefs D’Or -- the prestigious international association of concierges – at a lodge property in the country) can arrange for a truly exclusive one of a kind experience. Whether that be scootering around the scenic roads of the South Island, a helicopter trip from Otahuna to the Waipara wine region of New Zealand, a private visit to a ‘Marae’ (the gathering retreat of New Zealand’s original inhabitants, the Maoris) or a day of fly fishing on a remote river, Tim can create an experience long remembered.

Price: The cost to rent Otahuna from April 1-September 30 is NZD $5740 (US $4250) per night plus tax and from October 1 – March 31 is NZD $9600 (US $7150) per night plus tax. This includes daily cocktails and canapés, five-course degustation dinners with wine pairings, and cooked and/or continental breakfast. Separate pricing will be available for additional details involved in wedding planning.

Why it's Dreamy:
Otahuna Lodge is one of New Zealand's premier destination retreats. Re-opened on May 1, 2007 following a significant, four-month renovation undertaken by new owners, American-born Hall Cannon and Miles Refo, Otahuna Lodge is located on the South Island. Just 20 minutes from Christchurch, Otahuna features seven guest suites, a 30-acre garden, heated pool, Jacuzzi, tennis court and fitness facility with a spa treatment room. The Lodge, built in 1895, was home to leading New Zealand parliamentarian, Sir Heaton Rhodes for more than 60 years. Otahuna is regarded as the finest example of Queen Anne architecture in Australasia.

08162007: Vegas Hotels Grow, Renovate

It's a sure bet that when it comes to Las Vegas hotels, things are always getting bigger and better. We've received word of two big projects that will add new appeal to what are already two very popular hotels on the Strip:

• Caesars Palace
Look for a $1 billion (yes, billion) expansion at this mega-hotel on the Strip. The project adds the new 665-room Octavius Tower. The Octavius Tower will be located adjacent to a new 263,000-square-foot meeting and convention center. Three new luxurious pool villa suites will be built along the second floor of the new tower and will overlook three new swimming pools that will rim an expanded outdoor whirlpool spa retreat, a poolside café and nearby garden wedding venue. The expansion is slated for completion in early 2009. In addition to the new Octavius Tower, the resort’s existing 512-room Forum Tower will undergo a major refurbishment.

• Luxor
Just down the street, Luxor has unveiled a big renovation plan of its own. The
multi-phase plan is designed to bring new energy to the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. The first phase will encompass the casino level. Projects in Phase One of Luxor’s evolution include a host of sexy-chic new restaurants, lounges and nightspots, as well as a spa-like poolside lounge, redesigned casino floor and Cirque du Soleil show featuring illusionist Criss Angel.

Later, the second phase focuses on changes to the property’s signature atrium and galleria areas including several retail changes, a re-branded coffee shop and new buffet. The third phase will concentrate on room remodeling and is planned to begin in 2009.
