Cozy Up in a Mountaintop Lodge

Looking for a romantic getaway in one of the most remote areas of North America? Check out Purcell Mountain Lodge, a mountaintop retreat located high in the alpine on the border of Glacier Nationnal Park. Accessible only by helicopter, with no roads in sight, the Lodge is an oasis of secluded wilderness, luxurious comforts and outdoor activities.

Nestled in the middle of the largest alpine meadow in British Columbia, the Lodge is surrounded by an extremely fragile ecosystem. The surrounding alpine meadows are home to deer and elk, grizzly bears and bald eagles. And many of the plant species that grow at this altitude are rare and short lived; though wildflowers may bloom all summer long, the summer growing season at this elevation is a scant two months.

When first scouting locations for the Lodge, founders Paul Leeson and Russ Younger were very aware of nature's delicate balance around them. Avid environmentalists and backcountry skiers, they were wary of disrupting the area unnecessarily. "We wanted to build a modern, upscale wilderness operation for guests to be able to enjoy this amazing location in comfort - but it needed to be based on sound environmental principals to ensure low-impact and long term sustainability."

To that end, Paul and Russ initiated a number of backcountry innovations, including a state of the art hydro-electric system that harnesses the power of a nearby creek to supply the Lodge with electricity. They also custom-designed a waste water treatment plant that is still considered today to be a model of backcountry sustainability and responsible ecotourism. Even the design of the Lodge itself was carefully considered, so that the orientation of the building, along with its overhanging roof, maximize solar heat during the winter and protect it from overheating in the summer.

This early environmental ethic lives on today in the practices of the staff and management of the Lodge, from recycling, to biodegradable amenities, to guest protocol, every aspect of the Lodge's routine is assessed in such a way as to minimize its overall impact on the area. All garbage is flown out from the Lodge, and guest linens are cleaned off-site so as not to contaminate the soil or drinking water in the area with cleaning agents. Even the number of guests is controlled each season, to ensure that excessive numbers aren't negatively impacting the area.

Hotelito Desconocido Joins Mexico Boutique Hotels Collection

Mexico Boutique Hotels, a collection of stylish properties throughout Mexico, announced the addition of Hotelito Desconocido, a renowned luxury property just 60 miles south of Puerto Vallarta.

Hotelito Desconocido, affectionately called 'Hotelito' by those in the know, is the 46th addition to Mexico Boutique Hotels' growing assortment of properties, each carefully selected for membership by Founder John Youden because of its distinctive individuality and charm.

Why It's Dreamy: Nestled on a wetland estuary on the Coast Allegre between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, this newest Mexico Boutique Hotels member is located on one of the most famous sea turtle and bird reserves in Mexico. Just 60 miles South of Puerto Vallarta, 3 miles from Cruz de Loreto and less than two hours from the nearest airport, Hotelito uses only solar energy. At night, hundreds of candles light the rooms and restaurant while luminaries illuminate pathways that meander throughout the resort. A short rowboat ride across the estuary, the Pacific washes ashore a pristine virgin beach where sea turtles nest from July to January.

Surrounded by the natural sounds of birds and frogs, Hotelito's unique accommodations are constructed in the style of an old Mexican fishing village. Guestrooms are in 'palafitos', bungalows of indigenous construction, built on stilts over the edge of the estuary surrounding the main group of structures. Wood floors and palapa roofs compliment each hut's decorative details with bright, colorful interiors. Hand painted murals and whimsical antique furnishings are traditional Mexican with a modern flair.

Bathrooms feature bamboo showers with water from solar-powered heaters that provide privacy in a stunning garden backdrop. With no electricity, candles provide illumination at night and solar-powered ceiling fans provide optional in-room cooling.

Dining: Hotelito's oceanfront palapa restaurant and bar serves a sumptuous breakfast buffet and elegant dinners. A traditional Mexican kitchen prepares regional specialties with an emphasis on fresh fish and seafood, as well as prime beef and poultry. Food is prepared with ingredients from the hotel's organic garden, as well as the daily catch of local fishermen. Lunch is served at Hotelito's Beach club, El Nopalito, an oasis overlooking 40 miles of unspoiled beach.

Activities: Guests of Hotelito can float lazily in an ingenious saltwater pool or luxuriate in a primitive spa, which boasts numerous authentic treatments including steam baths, cold water Jacuzzis, aromatherapy massage, reflexology, mud baths and hot stone massages. For travelers seeking a more active escape, an array of activities are available including horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, billiards, bird watching, and more. From June to January, guests can participate in the sunset release of baby sea turtles from the nearby protected nesting area.

As with the majority of Mexico Boutique Hotels properties, Hotelito Desconocido provides the ultimate backdrop for group functions including destination weddings.

Romantic Anse Chastanet Adds Jade Mountain

Those of you who have read about our travels in St. Lucia know that we've cited the island's Anse Chastanet property as one of the Caribbean's most romantic resorts thanks to its scenic vistas and open-air architecture. Of the hundreds of romantic rooms we've been lucky enough to enjoy around the globe, Anse Chastanet's Room 7F is the ONLY one of our room numbers we can still recall.

We just learned that things are even getting better at Anse Chastanet thanks to the addition of Jade Mountain, an exclusive resort with a resort.

Why It's Dreamy: Jade Mountain will feature new infinity pool suites: your bedroom, living and private infinity edge pool glide into one another. Like the signature rooms of Anse Chastanet, the fourth wall is missing entirely – so there's nothing between the two of you and St. Lucia's twin Pitons and the shimmering Caribbean Sea.

The Jade Mountain suites are deliberately techno-free just like the rest of Anse Chastenet – there are no telephones, radio, or television. Each suite has a unique bell pull cord to summon a dedicated room service and housekeeping team 24 hours a day.

Although it's difficult to tear yourself away from a room like this, there's also on on-site spa as well as the Jade Mountain Club –a casual space in which to enjoy a drink or light meal — with its own large communal infinity pool.

All rooms have refrigerators, in suite coffee makers, irons and ironing boards. The “Sun” infinity pool suites also have a small wine cellar in addition to the refrigerator. The bathrooms have tropical hardwood vanities with fine brushed stainless steel or nickel plated European fixtures. Each bathroom features a large whirlpool tub for two on a raised dais overlooking your room, pool and the view.

All pools feature shallow water lounging areas in addition to a large swimming area 4' 6" in depth. They are illuminated at night with fiber optic lights the color of which guests can personally control.

Room Categories:

In typical Anse Chastanet fashion, each of the infinity pool suites at Jade Mountain has been individually designed. Three room rate categories reflect the square footage of the suites, size of pool and the scope of the view. All suites have a phenomenal view of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea.

“STAR” INFINITY POOL SUITES:
The infinity pool suites are between 1400- 1800 square feet and face directly towards the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea. The average size of the infinity pools is 450 square feet.

“MOON” INFINITY POOL SUITES:
The infinity pool suites in corner positions are 1600-1950 square feet in size with infinity pools averaging 650 square feet. By virtue of their corner setting, the view encompasses not only the amazing Pitons and Caribbean Sea but also gently sloping hills with tropical foliage and cascading waterfalls

“SUN” INFINITY POOL SUITES:
The infinity pool suites with the most commanding 270 degree panoramic view are over 2000 square feet in size, and in particular elevated positions. The infinity pools are up to 900 square feet in size. The combination of additional square footage and amazing panorama makes these suites the most desirable for all those seeking the ultimate experience.

Hotel Marina El Cid Riviera Maya Announces All-Inclusive Package

The upscale Hotel Marina El Cid Riviera Maya has announced all-inclusive packages on the Riviera Maya corridor.

Junior suites are available from $99.50 (U.S. dollars), all-inclusive per person per night based on double occupancy, for spring and summer travel. Reservations are based on availability. Special rates for one, two and three-bedroom suites also are available.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian adding rondoval suites

Here's an idea we like: Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort is adding rondoval suites. We've stayed at their rondoval suites at Sandals Antigua and loved them (these are the cone-roofed, rounded cottages with a definite Caribbean feel). The rondoval rooms will come in two new suite categories: the “Ultra Grande Luxe Beachfront Rondoval Suite” and the “Ultra Luxury Beach Rondoval Suite.” The new rooms launch on August 18, 2006.

The rooms feature large, flat-screen plasma television but try to distract him with the other goodies in the room: a Roman tub, a private pool deck right off the bathroom, an outdoor shower and even your own plunge pool. There's even a private hammock.

Combining the thrill of a deep jungle experience in Corcovado with extreme pampering at three of Costa Rica’s top all-inclusive beach resorts makes indelible memories. Couples spend the first night at the five-star Costa Rica Marriott in San José, then travel a scenic route to Corcovado. The journey involves a 40-minute flight and a 90-minute guided boat ride through the mangroves of the Sierpe River estuary, followed by an ocean transfer to Corcovado. Accommodations are in beautifully appointed bungalows at Casa Corcovado, an ideal spot for adventure, compelling excursions and romance.
