The 2005 hurricane season–and the news coverage of all the destruction left in the wake of those killer storms–won’t quickly be forgotten. If you are thinking about a Caribbean trip during hurricane season, which starts on June 1 and runs through the end of November, it’s interesting to see the results of the Dow Jones Island Index, which rated 40 destinations according to safety from nature’s dark side.
The Dow Jones Island Index listed 40 vacation destinations and their ranking according to environmental factors over the last 20 years. What did they take into consideration? Index results were measured from 12 risk factors island tourists might face face including the number of hurricanes to strike land, UV indexes, coral bleaching, beach erosion and other natural disasters. Other factors included the presence of active volcanoes, number of shark attacks and change in average land and oceanic temperatures.
The results? Overall, Curaçao was voted the fourth least-risky island, and number one in the Caribbean. Curaçao is located outside of the hurricane belt.
Remember, although the hurricane season runs six months, the riskiest months for hurricanes are August through October.
