Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan

Tucked on the shore of Lake Michigan lies this hidden gem of a park. The park stretches not only along 35 miles of lakeshore, but it also takes in two islands: North and South Manitou Islands. There’s a little bit of everything here, from beaches to forests to museums.

Are We There Yet?

The park is located west of Traverse City on M-72 or north from Frankfort on M-22. The visitors center is located on M-72 at the east end of Empire.

What’s There To Do Here?

Make your first stop at the visitor’s center in Empire (there’s another small visitor’s center out on South Manitou Island) for an overview of the park’s many features.

From there you can plan your course of action which might include:

  • Canoeing. Several operators rent equipment so you can paddle down the Crystal or Platte rivers.
  • Island hopping. Ferry service links the lakeshore to the islands.
  • Touring the historic farming district. You can also take a tour out on South Manitou Island of an historic farming area.
  • Hiking. There are over 55 miles of trails wind through the park.
  • Cross country skiing. Winter visitors can take advantage of those hiking trails, too - just strap on the skis.
  • Maritime Museum
  • Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
  • Dune Climb
  • Fishing
  • Swimming

When Are We Going?

The months of July and August are the peak times for this park, but even then you won’t find big crowds. The summer weather here is nice and comfortable. During the winter months, however, you’ll find this an extreme place to visit; watch for snowstorms and below freezing temperatures.

How Long Are We Staying?

You’ll want to budget most of a day for a complete look at the park, the visitor’s center, and the museum.

What Should We Bring?

Insect repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, and good walking shoes are at the top of the list during the summer months. Bring along some layers, too, for chilly evenings.

Where's Our Room?

Starting in mid-April and running through November, two campgrounds are available.

The Platte River Campground has all the comforts of home: rest rooms, electric hookups, hot water showers, and more. If you don’t need all that, the D. H. Day Campground has outhouse-type toilets. Primitive camping is also available on the two islands. All campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis.
