The Destination Wedding Workbook

  Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Indiana

The boyhood of Abraham Lincoln is always fascinating to children. They can learn more about his childhood years in the farm town at this site. Lincoln’s mother died when he was nine and is buried here at the farm.

Are We There Yet?

The park is located two miles east of Gentryville in the far southern reaches of the state. To reach Gentryville from I-64, take exit 57 for US 231. Continue south through Dale on US 231 to Gentryville, where you’ll head east on Indiana Highway 162 for two miles.

What’s There To Do Here?

There are several visitor sites at this park:

  • Memorial Visitor Center. This center includes a museum and two memorial halls for Abraham Lincoln and his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Children can explore exhibits about Lincoln’s boyhood and the life the Lincoln family led as Indiana pioneers at a time when this part of the country was wilderness. There’s a film about Lincoln’s childhood days here as well.
  • Lincoln Living Historical Farm. This pioneer farm recreates the days of the 1820s with costumed rangers, cabins, farm animals, and gardens. The farm is open daily from mid-April through September and weekends only in October.
  • Trails. There are three walking trails in the park. Of special interest is the Lincoln Boyhood Nature Trail.

When Are We Going?

Summer is the busiest time at this park.

How Long Are We Staying?

The National Park Service recommends about a two hour visit at this site.

What Should I Bring?

Good walking shoes are helpful if you’ll be taking the trail; some insect repellent might be good as well.

Which One Is Our Room?

You won’t find any lodging or camping in the park, but overnight accommodations are available in the communities of Dale, Tel. 812/937-4445, and Santa Claus, Tel. 812/937-2848. Lincoln State Park, adjacent, offers campground facilities, Tel. 812/937-4541.
