Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

For those who dream of a forested land tucked in amid an enormous lake, this is it. Isle Royale is as wild as this country gets: search for a moose, take out a canoe, listen for birds in the forest, climb a lighthouse for a view of this massive lake, fish for your own dinner. This beautiful park is a great summer destination for couples eager to enjoy nature.

Are We There Yet?

The park is located in Lake Superior 17 miles southeast of Grand Portage, Minnesota or 45 miles north of Copper Harbor, Michigan.

What’s There To Do Here?

Walkers and hikers will be especially happy here thanks to the park’s 165 miles of trails around the island. Also, canoeing is a very popular activity here.

Don’t miss the visitor centers at Rock Harbor and Windigo for more information about the natural history of the region.

A sightseeing cruise on the lake is a wonderful activity for couples. Operated by National Parks Concessions Inc., these sightseeing boats offer a peek at many sights you can only see from the water. Call National Parks Concessions Inc., 906/337-4993 in the summer or 502/773-2191 in the winter.

When Are We Going?

The peak time for visitors is July and August, the warmest season. The park, in fact, closes during the winter months. Fall and spring are quiet times with limited transportation services.

How Long Are We Staying?

You’ll want to budget several days to enjoy this park. The natural attractions here have to be taken at a leisurely pace.

What Should I Bring?

Everyone should bring along layers, even during the summer months. At this latitude, summer evenings can be chilly, especially if there’s a breeze on the lake. Rain gear is a good idea as well to protect against summer downpours. Insect repellent is also important in the summer months.

Where's Our Room?

You’ll find tent camping on a first come, first serve basis. Lodging is also available at Rock Harbor Lodge, managed by the National Parks Concessions, Inc.
