Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana

The lakeshore, located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, offers both historic and natural attractions ranging from a working 1900-type farm to pristine dunes.

Are We There Yet?

Located 50 miles southeast of Chicago, the park is accessible from I-94 or Indiana Toll Road I-80/90. Take the exit for US 49 North and continue to US 12. Continue and follow the signs to the park.

What’s There To Do Here?

You’ll find plenty of activity options in this busy park including:

  • Hiking. Take your pick, from dune trails to forest trails for a hike.
  • Fishing. You can fish along the shores of Lake Michigan or in the Little Calumet River but you will need an Indiana State fishing license.
  • Swimming. There are three beaches manned by lifeguards from mid-May through Labor Day, a great option for couples. West Beach offers the most facilities including concessions, showers and a picnic area.
  • Dune Climbing. The two of you can climb along the marked dune trails in West Beach and Mt. Baldy.
  • Chellberg Farm. Travelers enjoy this 1900s farm, once home to a Swedish family.

When Are We Going?

Summer is the best time to visit the park, although late spring and fall months can be pleasant as well.

How Long Are We Staying?

You can see the highlights of the park in just a couple of hours or, to really get a feel for the park, you can make it a longer stay.

Where's Our Room?

If you get lucky, you just might get a campsite at the Dunewood Campground, the only one at the lakeshore park. You can’t make reservations but you can get there early for your best chance at one of the 79 sites. The campground includes hot water showers.

You’ll also find accommodations at the state park and in nearby Beverly Shores, Chesterton, Michigan City and Portage, Indiana.
