We're planning to honeymoon in India. Do we need immunizations? Malaria preventative?

Congratulations on your upcoming honeymoon! We loved India; it's a very special place. Before our trip, we checked with our doctor about immunizations and malaria prevention; malaria prevention really varies depending on the area of India in which you'll be traveling and the time of year.

If your city doesn't have a traveler's clinic, a good resource for information on suggested immunizations, preventatives, and the general health situation in regions around the world is the Center for Disease Control's Travelers' Health website. You'll be able to search by specific destination as well as by region for information on health concerns. You'll also find helpful information about food and water safety.

The best advice we can give regarding immunizations is to start early. It's best to check with your doctor early (clinics in smaller towns may have to order shots or malaria preventative). Also, if you do have any ill effects from the immunizations, you want to be well past that before your wedding and honeymoon. Happy travels!
