SISSEL
by Grace Sydney
BIOGRAPHY
Her voice was
a wordless lament for the souls which slumbered beneath
the waves in the epic romance "Titanic". Spellbound
by this siren's song which resonated through darkened
movie theaters, American audiences had little idea that
they were hearing the vocal stylings of one of Norway's
most prized treasures-- Sissel.
Since her debut
album at the age of sixteen, Sissel Kyrkjebo has been
the darling of the Skandinavian media, who have dutifully
reported on everything from the singer's hairstyle to
the details of her lavish wedding, which was held in the
12th century Romanesque chapel Mariakirken in her hometown
of Bergen.
This Norwegian
songstress has proudly represented her country at such
prestigious events as the Lillehammer Winter Olympics
and the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, while at the
same time broadening her musical horizons with collaborations
with such internationally known acts as Placido Domingo,
Josh Groban and The Chieftains.
SISSEL
As evident
in "Titanic", Sissel's voice has the ability
to conjure up images in the mind's eye of a sepia-toned,
romantic past. She reaches back to bygone days with the
classic ballad "Shendandoah," which is tinged
with sentimental melancholy, while more contemporary offerings
such as "All Good Things" and "Weightless"
are touching melodies which soothe the spirit. This
self-titled 2002 CD is a compilation of new material blended
with songs from her previous award winning albums as a
way of introduction to the English-speaking market.
