The Destination Wedding Workbook

Pop Idol, like the show it inspired, American Idol, is a cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom that has launched the careers of a new generation of singing sensations. The show's concept mirrors that of its American equivalent, and from a field of over 10,000 hopefuls competitors battled to become the ultimate pop idol. After enduring weekly eliminations and the barbs from a panel of judges (which included acid-tongued Simon Cowell), Will Young emerged as the victor.

His first single, "Evergreen", is the fastest-selling record in UK history, and his second release, a remake of The Doors' "Light My Fire", also raced to number one. Will Young's popularity among the British people even caught the attention of royalty, and at the suggestion of Prince William the fledgling entertainer was added to the lineup of legendary acts that performed at Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The success of first runner-up Gareth Gates parallels that of his singing opponent. His first two singles also went straight to the top of the charts, and he had the honor of singing Elvis Presley's classic, "Suspicious Minds", in the European release of Disney's "Lilo and Stitch". These two former rivals have recently recorded a duet of The Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road", and their albums, along with the other contestants of Pop Idol, are anxiously awaited by their legions of fans.

POP IDOL- BIG BAND ALBUM
