SARAH BRIGHTMAN by Grace Sydney A native of Hertfordshire, England, her first foray into the world of the performing arts came as a member of various dance troops. Eventually, she felt the lure of the London stage, and soon she was cast in an early version of CATS, created by the man she would wed: Andrew Lloyd Webber. As the legendary British composer's wife and muse, she breathed life into the role of Christine in Webber's musical adaptation of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of The Opera. Her portrayal of the tragic heroine in this tale of passion and pathos left an indelible impression in the hearts of theater lovers. Sarah and Andrew's marriage dissolved in 1990, and over the years she has continued to enthrall audiences with her varying musical styles, deftly singing both operatic pieces and hauntingly beautiful New Age renderings. The former couple have retained a deep respect and affection toward one another, and in her current performances she proudly includes the music composed by her past love. Sarah Brightman creates in her 1999 release, Eden, a virtual garden of delights to tempt anyone's musical palette. For lovers of classical music, she offers Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Nessun Dorma", which she infuses with a before unheard feminine energy for a dramatic effect. For those with more contemporary taste, there is a moving Italian rendition of Titanic's theme, "My Heart Will Go On" ("Il Mio Cuore Va"), and New Age-tinged compositions, such as the title track, "Only An Ocean Away" and "Deliver Me", which takes the listener just a little closer to heaven.
