Who: Actor Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith

When: August 4, 2001

Where: Ballintubber Abbey ceremony followed by a reception at the Ashford Castle Hotel in County Mayo, Ireland

This stellar wedding wasn't the castle's first brush with stardom. Former guests have included Brad Pitt, John Travolta, Robin Williams, Sharon Stone, King George V, and Princess Grace of Monaco. The castle even appeared in the final two-hour episode of Brosnan's TV series, Remingston Steele.

The Event: With a setting at an 800-year-old abbey and a 13th century castle on the shores of Ireland's largest lake, it was no surprise that the wedding of Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith would be a dramatic and beautiful event.

The group of about 120 witnesses took over the historic hotel for the weekend's festivities. The wedding theme was a combination of A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Secret Garden, filled with lights and multitudes of flowers.

The Dress: The bride wore a beaded gown by Richard Tyler.

A Special Moment: Keely Shaye Smith surprised Pierce Brosnan with an ice sculpture of Rodin's The Kiss.

The Reception: The couple had a six tiered cake and were showered by rose petals while cutting the cake.

Add some starlit touches of your own...

If you liked Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith's nuptials, consider how you can add some stellar touches to your own ceremony. For example:

• surprise your groom at the end of the ceremony. Your surprise doesn't have to be as grand as Keely Shaye Smith's ice sculpture; you can surprise your new husband with a special food or a gift you quietly exchange when you are alone the first time as husband and wife.

• consider a castle wedding. Ireland and Scotland are filled with castles perfect for the wedding of your dreams. [Read our article on Scotland's castle weddings here.]
