Equestrian Classes in Mexico

Sure you picture yourself galloping down a Mexican beach on your honeymoon--but how about a romantic getaway to learn more about Mexican horsemanship? Equestrian lovers can learn more about charreria, which dates back to the 16th century.

The charreria is highlighted by the charreada, an event that includes equestrian competitions and demonstrations, costumes, music and food.  Male participants called charros (cowboys) compete in roping and riding events and escaramuza (cowgirls) perform precision maneuvers while riding sidesaddle.

Where to Learn:

The Federacion Mexicana de Charros (Mexican Federation of Charros) offers classes in Charreria throughout Mexico and the United States. For more information, visit www.nacionaldecharros.com.

Where to see a charreada:

Whether you get to participate in classes or not, don't miss a chance to watch a live charreadas in Mexico.

Top spots include:

  • Mexico City’s Monumental Plaza Mexico
  • Guadalajara’s Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso (in October)
  • Guadalajara's Lienzo Charro de Jalisco (most Sundays)
