Gatlinburg
Museum Recalls Dukes of Hazzard
Whether youre a long-time fan of the Dukes of Hazzard television
series or a new buff thanks to the Jessica Simpson movie, youll
find a unique museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee thats custom made
for your interest.
Cooters Place is located on the edge of Gatlinburg (the community
known as the Honeymoon Capital of the South thanks to its numerous wedding
chapels and cozy cabins). Cooter, AKA Ben Jones, is the force behind the
museum which houses several cars from the series as well as plenty of
memorabilia ranging from clothing to toys to posters.
The
star attraction, of course, is the General Lee, the orange Dodge Charger
used in the popular series. Many times, youll find the General Lee
parked right out in front of the museum (it does travel to make special
appearances and theres also a second Cooters Place coming
to Nashville.)
For a few dollars, you can
have your photo made inside the General Lee or, for no charge, enter the
museum/gift shop for a look at the extensive collection of memorabilia
the show spawned. A gift shop sells General Lee t-shirts and Cooter's
Place souvenirs.
Hours
The museum is open daily.
Admission is free.
Annual Events
The annual DukesFest is
a huge gathering of show fans, held every summer in Gatlinburg. The
event includes visits by cast members, drag racing, live music, and
more.
