Scarborough Faire: The Romantic Renaissance
by Eleanor S. Morris

Oh, for the romance of the days of yore, when brave knights went jousting to win the hearts of fair ladies, madrigal groups played sweet music on harps and dulcimers, minstrels and bards and strolling players entertained the multitudes.

Now today you can actually experience such joys of old in a 16th Century English Village recreated in the heart of Texas.

SCARBOROUGH FAIRE

From early April through Memorial Day, guests at the Scarborough Faire find themselves in the midst of a country faire replete with Renaissance games and rides, a Tournament Field where bold knights joust thrice daily, and more. You'll be invited to participate in the merriment of more than 200 strolling characters, such as the Royal Court, the Gypsy Troupe, even the mud beggars. All engage spectators in spontaneous theater and create a unique performer/guest relationship.

WEDDINGS

Couples come from all over to hold their weddings during this yearly event. Imagine a Royal Renaissance Wedding in a 16th century setting. Ceremonies are held in the romantic Wedding Garden, and you may choose such options as music for your ceremony and reception, a sumptuous Renaissance banquet and flower garlands for your bridesmaids. Whether you choose the Nobility & Royalty packages or the Gentry Packages, you and your guests also enjoy the music, the merriment and the magic of Scarborough Renaissance Faire.

Each wedding package includes the services of a licensed official in Renaissance attire. However, if you wish to arrange for your own officiate, just let the wedding coordinator know in advance. (For more information contact weddings@scarboroughrenfest.com.)

MERRIMENT AND MAGIC

You'll be met by villagers speaking the "King's English," so be prepared to be greeted by "Good day, my Lord (or Lady), how farest thou?" Or, "Well met on this fine festival day." Even "What heights do be?" which translates as "What's up?"

Many regular yearly visitors (and also first-timers) enter into the Renaissance feeling full-out by arriving in costumes of their own 16th century finery.

Strolling players, 20 entertainment stages, Renaissance games and rides, add to the fun. You'll find continuous entertainment on the stages, which often invite audience participation.

You'll watch artisans demonstrating such ancient arts as glass blowing, blacksmithing, broom making, leather workings, metal forging, sword and soap making.

Stage shows feature sword fighting, falconry, daredevil acrobats, hilarious pantomime, singing groups and lots of comedy. But the most popular show at the faire is the Joust.
