Planning
a Winter Wedding
Considering walking in a winter
wonderland ... all the way up the aisle? If you're planning a winter wedding,
you've got special questions that a June bride doesn't consider.
To help you with those plans,
we've talked with Hollie Zelenka, Senior Sales Manager and Marriott
Certified Wedding Event Planner, about planning a winter wedding.
Hollie plans weddings at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center
so she's aware of the questions this season's brides have.
What
special considerations might winter brides have and how can these be overcome?
Winter brides worry mostly
about the weather. Cleveland has it down pretty well, the main roads
are always kept clear, so it is easy to get into downtown, regardless
of how much snowfall.
Coat check is also a must.
We have a professional coat check always on staff during the winter
months.
Also, most brides arrange
for their photos to be taken indoors. We encourage them to use the hotel
lobby as a background setting. Great view outside of downtown Cleveland
can be seen through the windows -- great to capture in the pictures.
How
can couples bring the spirit of the season to their destination wedding
through decorations, dress, or music?
I think the
bride can set the tone by wearing a dramatic coat over her gown. Winter
wedding gowns have long capes with fur trim, that are wonderful.
Also, I love all white at
a winter wedding. All white flowers, table linens, chair covers. It
is so classy and timeless. I love the look of little white lights in
large trees in a candlelit ballroom on a dark winter evening. Even classical
Christmas music, no vocals, playing in the background during dinner
versus love songs.
What
special additions can brides bring to their reception in terms of food,
drink, and decorations to give the venue a cozy feel?
A great idea is a coffee
bar. Flavored coffees in great mugs with liquors such as Baileys, Frangelico,
Kahula. Also, soups as an appetizer, even warm desserts such as streusels,
cobblers, warm chocolate bundt cakes.
How
can brides utilize holiday decorations already in place at a venue to
keep decorating costs down?
Most hotels will have decorated
trees in place between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. My best advice
-- ASK! Ask if you can have a few trees in your reception area. Most
are on wheels, so they can be moved. Use the lobby as background for
your photos- the lobby usually has the most decorations.
