Children at Your Destination Wedding

Kids...they're a part of your wedding guest list, but should they be at your wedding? If not, what child care arrangements should you provide? And what about the reception?

For answers, we've gone to an expert: Kelly Rosenblatt, Marriott Certified Wedding Event Planner, for her tips on planning a wedding at this special property. Kelly gives us her special tips on planning a destination wedding which includes children on the guest list. [For Kelly's advice on planning a wedding at Renaissance Grand in St. Louis, click here for a related story and photos.]

On the subject of children at the wedding and reception, what do you recommend to brides?

Children at your wedding are a very personal decision. I find most brides are very quick to answer if they will be having children in the wedding and attending the reception. Should a bride decide to have children be involved, creating a memorable experience for the youngest of guests becomes an important element of the event and should not be overlooked.

What child care options can brides set up for young guests?

There are several child care options available at The Renaissance Grand Hotel. When children are attending the reception, the most popular choice is a children’s hospitality club. Consider arranging for a room located nearby the reception to be designated "for kids only."

After dinner service, the younger set will enjoy having a place to call their own. Set a theme and complete the room with a child's sweet table, milk and fruit juices, television with videos, board games, comfortable furnishings and a professional child care provider to oversee it all!

Another option is to offer a list of qualified nanny services to families attend the wedding. Child care can be arranged by the parents based on their family's individual needs.

And what could be more thoughtful than sending the young ones an amenity with a personal note from the bride and groom. Consider our Kids Rule - an activity book with markers, animal crackers, juice box, in room movie coupon and popcorn! This amenity can be arranged through the hotel’s room service.

How can brides make sure children--and adults--are happy during the reception?

During the reception the bride may wish to offer activities, such as a magician or face painter, to entertain the children. When age appropriate, consider seating young guests together but close by their parents. They will enjoy the experience and the parents will enjoy the adult time!

What special favors and meal options are important if the wedding party will include children?

Choices range from a child friendly menu perhaps cleverly packed in themed lunch box to activity gift bags placed at each child’s place setting. Gift bags should be filled with table friendly activities, games and puzzles appropriate for the child’s age.
