Trip cancellation insurance is coverage, just like insurance coverage for your car or health, which covers the cost of your trip in case you should need to cancel it.

Just what constitutes "needing to cancel" your trip? That's where the fine print comes in. It's up to you to read the details BEFORE you purchase the policy to determine just what will and won't be covered.

Most policies cover illness and death but will the policy include canceling your trip because the US threat level is raised to red? What about cancellation because of a terrorist act? (Most will cover cancellation because of acts of terrorism--but it's up to the insurance company to define just what it calls an act of terrorism.) What if there is a war? (FYI: trip cancellation won't cover cancellation due to war.) What if one of you is in the military reserves and is called up for active duty?
