Before Your Trip

continued from Romantic Travel in High Security Times

The US Department of State recommends a few pre-trip steps including completing the emergency contact section of your passport (bet you didn't do that, did you?) You can always complete that contact section in pencil in case your best contact numbers change over the 10 year life of your passport.

The State Department also suggests that you read the Consular Information Sheets and Travel Warnings they issue. You'll find these online here.

Also, be sure to leave a copy of your itinerary with your family and friends who aren't traveling with you. It's easy enough to get online and find out the phone and fax number of the hotels where you'll be staying. If you'll be on the move during your honeymoon or romantic getaway, leave a full itinerary with your flight numbers, train schedule, or driving plans.

Also, did you know that you can register your trip with the US Department of State before you leave? In case of an emergency (like an evacuation), they'll know where to reach you. There's no cost and there's the option, in the case of an emergency, to keep the details completely private or to contact your family, friends, or home doctor. To register your trip, go here: https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/home.asp
