The Wedding Planner
Lisa Floyd Collyer, The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, DC

This is the first in a series of monthly columns interviewing Marriott wedding planners; each planner has passed the Marriott International Wedding Certification Program.

This month, we interview Lisa Floyd Collyer, Director of Catering Sales, at The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.

What aspects of The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel are most attractive to brides?

Basically the historic selling point of the hotel is strongest for us. The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. That, as well as our service, draws guests. Built in 1925, the hotel is a hallmark of neoclassical architecture. We’re known as “Washington’s second best address.” We’re also just 10 minutes from the airport.

What are the most popular wedding venues at the property, both for large and small weddings?

We divide weddings into large and smaller ceremonies. We have three ballrooms and also offer private cocktail space. The larger weddings use the Grand Ballroom for 200 guests and more. The State Ballroom is for under 200 guests and the Colonial for 100 guests and under.

What local elements can a bride add to her wedding to give it a regional atmsophere?

A bride can use historic buildings and the colors of the flag to add atmosphere. I’ve seen brides use the names of presidents instead of table numbers. They can also have an ice carving in the shape of the White House. A lot of times people will do a “sweet dreams” table with cookies; they can opt for elephant and donkey cookies!

For brides planning a weekend wedding, what nearby attractions are of special interest to guests?

Our concierge helps guests with special events. There’s a magazine that points out what’s going on and some brides include that in a bag given to guests when they check in. Also, the Trolley stops nearby and takes guests to all the tourist hotspots.

To plan a Marriott wedding, call the Marriott of your choice and ask to consult with the hotel's wedding event planner. For more information on Marriott Hotels, Resorts, and Suites, call 1-800-228-9290 or see www.marriott.com.
