CRUISE FAQ What other charges will I have? Read the fine print. Port charges may not be included. Also, you will be paying for shore excursions, which can range from half-day to full-day guided tours. (Remember, though, that you're free to set up your own tours or a taxi guide.) Also, only the most exclusive cruise lines include alcoholic beverages. Tipping is also an additional expense. Do we need formal wear? On small ships, generally no. On larger ships, 'formal night' means a long dress or a cocktail dress for women; men carry a business suit or a tuxedo (recommended for upscale cruises.) Before you pack a tux, though, check with your cruise line. Several have rentals available on board. Do I need to worry about seasickness? Risk of seasickness depends on your own susceptibility to motion sickness, the weather, time on open seas, and the ship's size. Some passengers take preventative drugs or wear wristbands; check with your doctor for suggestions. Generally the larger the ship, the more stable the ride. Some ships weigh over 100 tons, making them stable even in fairly rough seas. Seasickness is generally not a concern on river cruises. Will the ship pull into port or tender passengers? This question is very important for travelers with disabilities or for families traveling with small children. Depending on the port of call, some cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers in small vessels to the pier; getting on and off these tenders can sometimes be difficult. If this is a concern, check first. |
