Life on Anguilla

This British Crown Colony is led by a governor and deputy governor, both British and appointed in Britain. Seven elected, one ex-officio, and two nominated members, a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, make up the Legislative Assembly. An Executive Council is composed of members of the government, the Governor, the Deputy Governor, and the Attorney-General. These Ministers have direct responsibility over all matters except those that are directly reserved for the Governor's office and for the legal matters that are the responsibility of the Attorney-General.

Much of the island's economy is dependent upon tourism. Anguilla'a tourism industry is composed of both day visitors from St. Martin and long stay visitors.

Other industries include fishing, farming, salt production, and boat building.

The small island is also an investment and banking center. The island has no income, capital gains, estate or other taxation on individuals or corporations. Many companies are incorporating in Anguilla to take advantage of the tax free climate.

The island's currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar, exchanged at a rate of EC $2.68 to US $1. There are no currency exchange controls. US dollars are seen more often than the EC dollar. However, if you do convert money into EC, convert your money back before heading home. Eastern Caribbean currency is not traded on the market and many banks cannot make conversions.

PEOPLE/CULTURE

Just under 9000 residents live on this island, many transplants from the US as well as Great Britain and Canada. On the island the predominant religion is Anglican, followed closely by Methodist. Seventh-Day Adventists, Baptist, and Roman Catholic worshippers are also found on the island.
