Getting
To Anguilla
Anguilla is served
by Wallblake Airport, located in the central part of the island
near the capital city of The Valley. Word is that the government
is currently looking for another site to locate the airport,
one that will permit an extended runway to accommodate larger
aircraft.
Arrival in Anguilla requires a passport for all travelers except
Anguillians or Americans who can show a birth certificate and
photo ID, driver's license with photo, or voter registration
card and photo ID.
Air travelers arrive at Wallblake airport either by American
Eagle from American's hub in San Juan, Puerto Rico or by connection
from nearby Sint Maarten (either plane or ferry). The flight
from Sint Maarten to Anguilla takes approximately seven minutes
and costs about US$70 roundtrip (daylight fare); air charter
between the two airports runs about $300 per person.
For information on air connections, contact:
American Airlines
(800) 433-7300, from the island dial 497-3131)
WINAIR (264-497-2238 or 264-497-2748, fax. 264-497-3351).
Daily flights from Sint Maarten.
LIAT (800-468-0482, 800-981-8585, 264-497-5000) daily
from Antigua, St. Kitts, and St. Thomas.
Tyden Air (800-842-0261, 264-842-0261, or 264-497-2719,
Fax 264-497-3079). Charter service anywhere in the Caribbean
and day tours to St. Barts, Nevis, and Virgin Gorda as well
as daily flights to Sint Maarten. Tyden also offers flights
to St. Thomas and St. Kitts.
Air Anguilla (264-497-2643). To Sint Maarten.
Flying time:
Antigua 1 hour
San Juan 1 hour
St. Thomas 45 minutes
St. Kitts 35 minutes
St. Maarten 7 minutes
Arriving by Ferry
Visitors also arrive
by ferry from St. Martin. The ride from Marigot on the French
side of St. Martin to Blowing Point, Anguilla takes 20-30 minutes.
The ferry allegedly runs every half hour (on the hour and half
hour) but don't set your watch by it. We arrived at 10:15 for
the 10:30 ferry and departed (on a standing-room-only vessel)
at 10:50. Some ferries are extremely speedy but have small capacity;
others are roomier but a little slower. It's all luck of the
draw which vessel will arrive.
To take the ferry to Anguilla, stop by the open air ferry station
on the north end of the market in Marigot. Go up to the window,
pay your $2 departure tax, and sign up on the manifest sheet,
listing your name, passport number, and nationality. The ferry
fee will be collected on board.
Upon arrival in Anguilla by either ferry or plane, visitors
show proof of citizenship. Passports are the easiest way to
show citizenship; official photo ID along with a birth certificate
with a raised seal can also be shown. A return or onward ticket
is also necessary.
Arriving By Private Boat
Arrival by private boat means clearing customs and immigration
in Blowing Point's ferryport or at Road Bay, Sandy Ground (the
customs office is located at the wharf, immigration is at the
Police Station).
Note that Anguilla's waters are protected and fines are levied
for dropping anchor without permission.
Getting
Through Customs in Anguilla
Admission through
Anguillian customs is quick and easy. Visitors are allowed to
bring in items compatible with their intended stay.
If you arrive in Anguilla aboard the ferry from St. Martin,
you'll pass through immigration and customs in Blowing Point,
Anguilla. Customs can sometimes be a little slow as many Anguillians
return home with their St. Martin purchases so allow some extra
time for this.
