General
Information
Currency:
The Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar is used in Anguilla; American
dollars are also accepted. The EC currency (also used in St.
Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda as well as other islands)
is exchanged at a rate of US$1 = EC$2.68.
Weddings in Anguilla:
Island resorts can plan beautiful weddings (as seen in 2004
on the Today show). See Anguilla's
marriage regulations for legal details.
Pets: Some
pets may be brought to Anguilla. Contact the Agriculture Department
at (264) 497-2615 or the vet at (264) 497-4600/4601 at least
six months prior to your visit.
Health: There's no need to worry about the drinking water
or food supply in Anguilla. Bottled water is served at most
restaurants because the island's drinking water supply is collected
rainwater, but tap water is safe to drink.
Most resorts have a doctor on call for any guest emergencies.
The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Stoney Ground just outside
The Valley (264-497-2552) also offers medical care and outpatient
services; the emergency room is staffed around the clock.
Dress: Swimsuits are de rigeur on the beach, but wear
a cover up away from the sand and swimming pool. Evenings are
typically casually elegant, although jackets are usually not
required. Call for dress recommendations if you have questions.
Nude and topless sunbathing is prohibited on Anguilla; to soak
in a little more sunshine than a bathing suit allows travel
to the clothing optional beaches on nearby St. Martin.
Crime: One of Anguilla's greatest assets is its low crime
rate. With its excellent economic position, crime is rare. However,
no destination is completely crime-free. Use the same common
sense precautions you would exercise at home.
Drugs: Anguilla exercises strict anti-drug laws. Marijuana
is an illegal substance and possession of it can result not
only in large fines but also in a prison term.
Telephone charges: Don't plan to just "reach out
and touch someone" from Anguilla--you might as well just
bring them along. Long distance calls to the US run about $2.50
per minute. Hotels often levy surcharges on top of this. Also,
800 toll-free numbers will not work from Anguilla. If you need
to place a call to an 800 number, dial 400 instead of 800; you
will be charged $2 per minute. (To reach 800 numbers at American
Airlines, call the local number: 497-3131.)
Internet: Cable and Wireless, with an office located
in The Valley, has Internet service available to visitors.
Business Hours: 8 to 5, Monday through Saturday. Only
a few stores are open on Sunday.
Currency: either US or Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollars
accepted. EC and US exchanged at a fixed rated, $1US = EC $2.70.
Electricity: 110 Volts AC
Post Office: open 8 am to 3:30 p.m.. Closed weekends.
Tipping: Usually added to your bill, but check with individual
establishment.
Communication:
Anguilla is home of a daily newspaper (The Daily Herald),
for a listing of what's happening look for the free What We
Do in Anguilla, distributed at area hotels. Three radio stations
fill the local airwaves: Radio Anguilla, Caribbean Beacon, and
ZJF 105.3 FM. Television broadcasting includes Channel 2 and
the Network Community Television.
